    HEVC x265

High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is a "new" video compression standard , one of several potential successors to the widely used AVC (H.264 or MPEG-4 Part 10). In comparison to AVC, HEVC offers about double the data compression ratio at the same level of video quality, or substantially improved video quality at the same bit rate.

One can find more and more torrents encoded with this new standard. The advantage is obvious, smaller files means shorter download time. But I'm not convinced with the final result, I found I get better quality with files encoded in x264 720p than in x265 1080p. Is it because the encoding was poorly done, my old home computer is not up to this new standard or because this new standard is not up to its claims ? Your opinion ?

I have been viewing a few h265 files over the last 6 or 8 months

the file sizes are definately smaller

I don't notice a huge amount of difference - but the biggest monitor I watch on is a 23 inch

I reverted to MPC-HC to play them
