Replacing an O!Play Mini...What's out there now?

My O!Play Mini has been given away and needs to be replaced. It did exactly what I wanted it to, it played my pirated movie files on the TV.

So what's needed in a new one is pretty basic. I need it to play files from an external hard drive and be independent of the PC. Looks as though a dongle won't do. Would like to have a box which streams from wifi.

There's so many TV/Media player boxes out there. Which one to choose? Anyone own one they can recommend?

Most TVs have HDMI. You can connect your laptop to your TV.

I use RGB connector from my laptop to projector.

I have a separate laptop just for home entertainment purposes.

You get more control over how to play your media if you run it through a laptop.

external hard drives are independant of the PC, just unplug it (via safely remove hardware, so not to corrupt your files) then plug it into your TV.

Is it a very old TV ?

Lots of people rave about the NVidia Shield, but it's a couple of hundred dollars.

TBH I've found I can comfortably stream HD content on a Fire TV Stick/Kodi.

I've a JVC LCD and a Samsung LED. They are about four years old and neither are "smart."

The Samsung is connected to my desktop PC by HDMI. I use that set up to download and watch movies. The JVC is in another room and I watch movies from my collection stored on external hard drives. Neither of my TVs can play mkv. files directly from an external hard drive. That's why I need a box.

The device baldrick recommended is what I am looking for.

A stick won't do the trick and Kodi shows me up for the computer 'tard I am.

Then I'd go for one of these:

    http://www.amazon.com/AVOV-TVonline-...529J34TEZT66KX

    It can:

    - Play movies from USB
    - Run Kodi
    - Work with third party IPTV services like Stalker
    - Run other Android IPTV/Movie apps like Icefilms

    About $90

By the way Kodi is a lot easier than you think. You open Kodi (which is preinstalled on the box above) and follow a few simple instructions and it will basically configure itself for you.

I wouldn't be afraid of it. Install it on your laptop and I'll send you a few links. If it doesn't work out you can just uninstall it.
