    Mad Men Coke Ad

Just watched the finale of Mad Men.

No plot discussion features in this post so it should be safe to read for folk who haven't seen the last episode yet.

The finale features a famous Coke ad from 1971.

Apparently it was a real ad and very famous in its day.

It was probably the first ad to feature 'multiculturalism' as a theme with all different coloured folk enjoying coke on a hilltop.

They use various international Coke bottles but the only one that you get a clear view of the language on is written in Thai.

It features several times and is held 1st by a black fella, then a kind of Nepali looking guy and then seems to be a black woman though you only see her hand and body.

No other language apart from English features clearly as far as I could see and no Thai looking person holds the bottle.

    Weird.

I thought you were 46? You don't remember it? I'm a similar age and remember it really clearly, it's probably the only ad I remember from that time.

The bottles are from lots of countries, coca cola/coke is spelled the same in pretty much any language using the roman alphabet. The original ad was broadcast in lots of different languages, depending on the country it was broadcast in. It was broadcast in English in English-speaking countries. Mad Men is dubbed into lots of different languages, so the song there probably will be too.

Always thought somebody did a really good job of rendering the style of the Coke logo into Thai, a really clever bit of typography.

There's a bottle-holding woman there looks isaan/khmer to me, not really sure how to tell where she's from without asking.

That on the right looks pretty SE Asian to me. Actually looks suspiciously familiar, though a little heftier these days.

The lyrics were also much more moving in German

Deutschland erwache aus deinem bösen durst!
Gib fremden soda in deinem Reich nicht Raum!
Wir wollen kämpfen für dein Auferstehn!
    Arisches Coke soll nicht untergehn!

Well Coke may have brainwashed Me into buying their product when I was younger, but now I don't touch the stuff, as it rots your guts apparently, so I've replaced it with Somtam.

Since Coke, fruit juice, tonic, Lipton etc. are full of sugar I am drinking boiled tree bark exclusively now.

I always thought Tonic water would contain much less sugar but it doesn't. It contains just as much. It really is a lot of sugar!

Don is on the US pacific coast hilltop at dawn as the sun 'rises' out of the Pacific Ocean when he gets his creative inspiration. But the Pacific Ocean faces West so how does that work?

I don't know what scene you are referring to but the last scene with Don sitting lotus and meditating is not at dawn. Looks like late afternoon by the shadows.

But in the scene we see the sun sitting on the horizon above the ocean. Then the meditation class leader says something about being together to celebrate the rising of the sun (if I recall correctly).

^Don is seen at sunset wearing a plaid shirt. The next scene is of the next day, Don is wearing a white shirt, the guru says 'We greet the new day etc'. There is no sun shown in any of the shots with the group meditating.

I have been in a Coke bottling factory and when I learned about the amount of sugar in one can I have never touched the stuff again and before that I drank it daily.

    Liquid poison.
