I knew a lady in the 1970s who used to say that, when I commented about her incessant sunbathing. She was a biology teacher, too.
Now she is most likely dead....from melanoma.

We? Kinda selfish, don’t ya think? I have a child (one that I know about) and I would like her and her children (whenever that happens) to be able to enjoy some of the same things I was able to enjoy while here.

No offence Billy but if you mention anything to do with religion on climate change thread it becmes a disaster.
Just to prove I am not biased I am going to do just that.

I wonder if many people realise that Darwin was a devout christian and he was greatly troubled that the revelation of his lifetimes scientific work would have an adverse effect on the church and its teachings.

I get very emotional when I talk about this issue because we as humans are ruining the earth with our own lack of care.

Then you take in all the other problems like oil spills, over fishing, greenhouse gases, extinction, deforestation, overpopulation, plastics, toxic chemicals sprayed on our food, etc... it is pretty scary to think that we are killing ourselves slowly.

I guess this video sums up how I feel about the whole subject. Hail Earth Day which has existed since 1970.

You have to understand and be able to interpret the complex issues before you can make any kind of judgement on the climate.

    Most people have no idea.

Even the majority of those most interested in stopping the abuse of the natural world by man are too cowardly to acknowledge the importance of the human population on the planet. This is why things look so bad to me.

Overpopulation can be a problem, but more people are having less children today than in the past. Two to two and a half children are what most countries in the east and west are having today. All you ever want to know about overpopulation in this video and it is educational and may surprise some of you with preconceived ideas that people are having too many children today.

Interesting points. I see two big problems:

    (1) Populations that used to have large families because of a high infant mortality rate still doing it even though that is no longer a factor.
    (2) Stupid Religious fecking twats.

Religion remains a factor but even qualified and experienced scientists seem reluctant to debate it. I blame the catholic guilt complex.
Poverty is also a major factor because it limits education.

There are also many misconceptions in the developed world caused by panic media like the Daily Mail.
Those who take the trouble to study the issue seriously can understand that population levels will plateau for a range of reasons, not least of which is education.
There is a common sense gene which activates when resources become scarce. Even the dirt poor realise eventually that their family size will determine their quality of life.
Education is one thing. Knowledge and understanding is quite another.

As the world becomes better educated the population will stabilise. The carrying capacity of the earths resources could also be improved, enabling the earth to support a higher population in less damaging ways than we do now.

It is not all doom and gloom but still much to be done.

    yes agree.

is there one boat out there cleaning up that plastic mountain mess <in the Pacific> where endangered birds and sea creatures are suffering and dying because of human carelessness ?
i haven't heard of one. Not one agency set up to clean it up.

We have no love or compassion ,, just the ugly face of profit
Any love or compassion is tucked away now in a fecking bank account.
The earth is our inheritance,, everyone's, but a bunch o psychos usually the top 2%
don't care. just take take take.

The 1 million in the uk who protested against going into Iraq were fobbed off.

Not far from where i'm staying a 75 yr. old lady has been in prison for 5 months now for ending the suffering of her 85 yr.old husband who was in agony with leukemia.
they were married for 50 years. she will stay in prison until magistrates decide what to do. i bet her husband probably did his service in ww2 ,,, just a guess. Talk about human rights. + all the other horror stories regarding the elderly and poor in our society.

Yes the psychological as well as the material damage in our midst is outrageous.

Lloyd's banking chief says, Lloyd's bank is now normal and hands himself a 1.9 million pound bonus. All with a smile on his face.

Not referring to Romanians, Bulgarians and Poles, but those in true poverty surviving on less than dollar a day in places like sub Saharan Africa.
The population in Europe and the Americas is actually falling.
I believe the common sense gene exists in humans but has become recessive.
There are many examples in the natural world where animals in niche habitats will modify their reproduction based on resource availability.

North African political refugees, asylum seekers and chancers on the make. Not poor just after a better life. Been like that for years.

Before we came along and started inventing shit the earth was probably in a fair equilibrium
With all due respect, that's completely incorrect. The Earth has never been in equilibrium; tis an oft misunderstood idea about the biosphere. Constant change is the order of the day.

words like equilibrium, tipping point and balance serve to imply something that's not true and has become a greenists holy grail. Humans cannot return the world to any mythical equilibrium that existed before humans because there is no such thing.

The rest of your points are very sound. We just need to remove such words from any environmental discourse in order to reframe our thinking and not give eco-warriors and the like false ammunition.

That's crap, Willy. Nature didn't introduce the idea to destroy itself methodically to benefit a single species.
