The ins and outs of torrent dowloading

CMN sent me some information about downloading with torrents. I have downloaded a few movies recently, but I did have more questions with some of the confusing codes and what movies to download.

What does seed mean? The more seeders the better is that right?

If you have scr beside a movie does that mean it isn't a good version to download? Is 1080p the best movies to download?

What about different sites to download movies...are there certain sites that have a better selection?

I was using kickass torrents recently, are there any better ones?

    Thanks

SCR means screener. A copy circulated by the makers to promote a film. Usually they are very good copies with occasional copyright warning messages shown during the film.

Seeds are the number of people making that torrent available for downloading. Leechers are the number of people wanting to download that torrent.
High seed numbers and low leecher numbers will usually download quickest.

Don't worry too much if a torrent has very high leecher numbers. It just means the torrent is popular and you may have to wait a while for your download to complete.

The best free sites are the pirate bay and KATfor everything and EZTV for TV shows. Other sites demand that you register and also that you keep a positive ratio of seeds to repay your download habits.

Yes, but they take longer to download and are a waste of time if the laptop you watch them on, or your TV are not 1920 x 1080.

Here's a couple of good uploaders you wont get any viruses off, the latter has his own site now, I think, there's some good older movies there though

    Download yify Torrents - KickassTorrents

    Download axxo Torrents - KickassTorrents

    axxo's new site

It is a less preferable version but better then a cam which is basically some person in a theater recording the movie with a camera.

It is the highest resolution but the files are much bigger then 720p so take longer to download. I usually stick to 720p unless it is a movie with a lot of CGI like Lord of the Rings otherwise 720p is usually good enough. Try to look for BRrip files first and then HDrip or Webrip after that. Also x264 is preferable over Xvid.

There are basically two types of torrent sites public and private. Public trackers like KAT and pirate bay are wide open and many of the movie and TV torrents are monitored by the MPAA and if you live in the US or UK you could get a letter sent to your ISP from these organizations and that could result in getting your internet access cut off. If you are in SEA then I would not worry about this. You chances of getting malware or virus's are also higher on public trackers.

Private trackers are invite only and are in some cases difficult to access however they are free from Hollywoods meddling and for the most part are virus and malware free. They also are better seeded so torrents download faster and they also get new torrents before public trackers. The one caveat is that you must seed your torrents or you will quickly be banned.

Okay, that's good to know. I have seen those cams in a movie before and they are awful. lol.

This is good to know... I wonder if I would get a letter then for downloading from KAT...is there a limit. I'll have to check the laws in this country. Seems odd though because I think everyone downloads movies this way these days.

You will see their names at the end of the file. Get familiar with them. They are the group or individual that encodes and uploads the files that you are downloading. They created the torrent.

    You should read this guide;

MT, these guys helped me a lot to get started with torrents. They are fount of wisdom.

After you use the torrent sites a while, you will recognize the names of people who make good files using little space. Those are the good uploaders.

Well that's not strictly true. Quite often it's a pukka copy, but just with "For your consideration for awards purposes only" printed every few minutes, or the occasional flip to monochrome.

The trouble is, a lot of arseholes these days label their crappy cams as Screeners.

And that is why it is very wise to read the comments on these torrents before downloading, Miss Traveller.

WunSeeDee is good provider name for old American movies and westerners but lately this person hasn't added much.

YIFY, JayBob, Ganool, BlueLady, Fookas, juggs, MAXSPEED are usually good names just check the comments to see if the download is quality. Usually they rate the downloads based on audio and video on a 1-10 scale. I stick with .avi format which is pretty much always under 1.4 megabytes and .mkv which is under 1 mb.You can also get mp4 and mpeg formats. Over time you'll get a feel for it. Avoid any .exe files! You don't have to download anything other than the .avi, .mkv file which the file that has the main video file.

If you download via "magnet" you'll get all the extra files so I prefer clicking on "torrent" download only. You can download using either style by clicking the link on the page. Make sure the link you click is for the movie you want and not for an advertisement. When you visit these sites you'll get popups. I've never had any problems with them but it's probably best to close them right away.

EZTV is good for some tv shows.

kickass, usabit and piratebay websites all work but piratebay seems to only offer magnet links now.

You need to use a site a few times to catch the quirks and figure out the safest downloads. There are people out there who put up stuff for download which can cause problems for you so beware. You'll get a feel for it as you go. Good luck with it.

    Common torrent movie file types.

    CAM
    - Worst quality, someone with a camera or phone in the cinema. Only if you absolutely definitely need to see the movie NOW!

    TELESYNCH
    - Telesynchs are cams made by projectionists upstairs and usually have digital audio.
Better quality than a cam as the image is stable and the audio copied but still poor.

    R5 Line
Copies made from usually Indian/Russian VCD releases. Watchable but of low video/audio quality (480 dpi)

    Screener
DVD or Blue Ray copy given out to the members of the Academy. Often munged in some way like an intermittent copywrite message, serial number, or frequent B&W scenes.

    WEBTV Rip

Copied from online pay per view. Watchable but often low quality.

    DVD-Rip
Copied from a DVD Quality depends on author and file size.

    BRD Rip
As above, but sourced from a blue ray disk.

it's the same and you should get a choice in the add new files box pop up box
it just takes longer to load -sometimes a minute or 2
or you can just get everything then when it starts downloading in 'files ' right click the ones you don't want and opp to not download them.
2nd way might make your computer reserve space for the files still.

    I like pirate bay best
    sometimes d2 beta
    d2.vu
which is probably the old Demonoid - you'll need your old password to log in anyway- though it's only just ticking over , it has a few nice torrents now and then , and no porn !
I like porn occasionally , but I just stream it , I've no interest in amassing a collection of 50,000 videos or even 1 .
And get sick of reading feck this feck that and other filthy titles.
