S4 self-upgraded to KitKat: some issues

My S4 recently self-upgraded to Android 4.4.2 (KitKat), and I've run into a couple of issues:

    1. VLC app can't find any video or audio files.
    2. I can't input a pattern security code, only a number (pin) code to unlock the phone/screen. Says 'disabled by admin, encryption policy or credential storage'.
    3. The 'hover' function doesn't work anymore (didn't use it much, gimmicky, but nonetheless).
    4. Hotmail doesn't auto-sync (ie. doesn't send emails to my phone), whereas it did this in the past.

Any ideas on sorting these issues?

I uninstalled and re-installed VLC (beta version - warned that it is unstable), still can't find video and audio files. Also synced hotmail, but it only last for a while then syncing is disabled.

Further to that, have you had any problems with your KitKat upgrade? Any ideas? Suggestions? Any must-have free apps?

    Regards
    BB

Edit: any idea on how to get rid of all the shitty Samsung bloatware I NEVER use, besides disabling them or booting the OS?

    Died? Bastard...

If you like a bigger phone than the new xperia z2 is great. If you like a smaller phone than the new xperia z1 compact is great.

The s4 is a good phone, of course. It's probably a matter of going back into the settings, maybe under apps check the permissions. For the email, go to settings, email, account settings then change the sync options. You might have to add Hotmail as an account if it was 'lost'due to the upgrade.

Papillion should be along soon to sort stuff out.

Funnily enough, my last Sony update stopped syncing automatically with my accounts, but seems as I am at work a lot, I didn't find it an issue', so never bothered sortin it out. If I was on an unlimited contract then I'd sort it out, but can't be bothered to have the data usage when I most use the work internet nowadays...

Being a Sony, I'm only on Android 3... They are rather slow to update compared to Samsung.

I thought Sony were quite quick with their updates. Kit Kat was rolled out a month ago for your phone

    4.3, I mean.

My phone is already old hat, and I'm on seconds - no 4.4.2 yet... The z2, z1c and z1 had it (and the problems...) a month ago.

    (1) Fuck VLC it's still not stable, use MX Player.
    (2) The new version obviously implements a more secure environment.

Turn off encryption on your SD card, so that if you lose the phone, any chump can get your gay porn selfies and post them on the internet.

    (3) Turn it back on again.
    (4) Turn it back on again.
    (5) Stop being a dick.

Edit: Root it and install a nice custom ROM

It updated my Note 3 to 4.4.2 while I was in Thailand, no problems so far, I had encryption turned on anyway.

Didn't lose Hotmail functionality, still pushes as normal.

I suppose it's different things to different people at different times... For me, with a decent 3g data plan, it just means that my email accounts come onto my phone in 'real time' (or close enough to appear so), thus my phone is always up to date and I don't have to worry about email accounts when out and about. Maybe a different term is better? It 'pushes' your emails onto your phone.

The latest version of Android long longer supports Flash (i.e. YouTube vids), which is crap.

Get Startup Manager from PlayStore and prevent from starting up all the apps that you don't need.
