4th Kindle crapped itself in 4 years

As everyone knows these things are great since you can carry a library in your pocket but they don't last long. Virtually disposable. And guaranteed that they are going to shit themselves at the start of a trip away from home.

I need to start carrying a back-up everywhere.

I have had one unit replaced under warranty but the other 3 (including this fucker) were just out of warranty.

Identical malfunction in every case. Part of the screen stops refreshing and is frozen with a fragment of screen saver. I am not abusing them in any way. They are treated gently and never allowed to get hot or damp or dropped.

I was struggling to get into Einstein's biography but had just got hooked when this dumb-fuck shit itself.

It is the bottom corner that is frozen so I can actually still read the book if I rotate the screen display orientation 180 degrees every half page... makes for frustrating progress however!!

I think my expenditure on Kindle hardware over 4 years probably matches what I would have spent on books so not saving much money even if I download everything using torrents.

Haven't had a single problem with mine, and it's a first-gen unit- are you using it in the shower or something?

Mine is well over a year old. It froze up once. I went to the Kindle Help page, and reset it in a few minutes (See Can123's Post for link).

I did the basic reset (1st method). Still has quarter screen frozen plus now some vertical and horizontal lines. I always tried this reset option before with the previous units and it never helped.

The instructions for factory reset do not seem to match this device.

The settings page does not have factory reset option.

The back does not seem to come off either.

The screen fault obscures the display of the version number so not sure what version I have but was purchased in April 2012. Has no hard keyboad like my generation 1 had. It is the basic 6 inch model with no 3G.

Hello my name isXXXXX look forward to assisting you today with your question and providing the best answer possible. Keep it charging and wait 10 minutes or until the light turns green whichever occurs first then It sounds like the firmware may be frozen try this and let me know the results hold the power switch for at least 60 seconds. Try this at least 3 times and then let me know what happens. The firmware can sometimes get frozen the same way that a computer will occasionally. If you need any clarification on this or have any questions about it please let me know, if not please don't forget to leave a positive rating as that is how this site credits me for my time. Also please note you are rating my service only and not this site or your Kindle. If for some reason you try to rate and you are not able to please let me know.

    This one Looper?

    I've got:

More than 2 years, I think - no problems at all.

What are you doing to yours, dressing it up? Gotta treat her gently, Looper - she likes a meal and a bit of romance...

^ Have you charged it first ?

Betty's will last a lot longer than your average Joe's, what with the amount of TLC, lube and ponds hand cream that he penetrates through it

    It sounds fucked.
Forget time wasting resets etc and toss it in the nearest bin.

Some people reckon it's static that ruins kindle screens , and thats why certain people, those who have a massive static field around them, go through a kindle every few weeks .

Put simply Looper you have 2 choices, either :
1- switch to a different reader, eg a Kobo , which is perhaps better anyway as it reads epub format books.
    or
2 - quit wearing those colouful turquoise nylon tracksuits , and shiny satin pyjamas.

    A tough choice ; I can hear you thinking , '' that Kobo sounds a decent e-reader... ''

Lick the screen then stuff it down your undercrackers.

    It will:
    a. Solve the problem.
    b. Give your old man a nice jolt.

Same here...only problem I have is that the characters have worn off on the keypad but its qwerty so no real hassle.

I haven't exactly treated it well either....

No resetting of any kind fixes it.

The Kindle Version 4 factory reset is in

    -Menu button
    >Settings
-Menu Button (again, it is not one of the visible selectable options under Settings like in older Kindles)
    >Factory reset

But anyway a quick online chat with Amazon and they have agreed to furnish me with a new Kindle for the modest sum of $65 which is a big discount on $109. The old unit is actually pretty scratched up so not too bad a deal.

    Here is the damage.

Bottom corner is obscured. I am actually making reasonable progress with the biography though. If the passage is not too technical I can second guess the words I am missing. If it is technical I switch the display 180 to read the last bit.

I have also reduced the font to minimum (since taking this photo) which means less page turns.

They replaced mine within twenty four hours at no charge. It would not allow itself to be be charged and, as this was an acknowledged fault of that model, they replaced without quibble.

Nooks are very good too and they are cheaper.

Same problem with my Kindle 3G. Simply went dead.

Bought a new one - the 6 inch non-3G version. Died within a month.

Amazon shipped me a new one at no charge, after initially saying I must send the defective (second) one back. They relented, and sent me my current one.

Had this one about a year. One or two scratches, but otherwise working fine.

Spend about $100/month on books. Couldn't be assed to torrent books.

Do miss my 'library' of actual books, but gave them away to friends. Kindle till I die. Or it does.

    Gently...?
    I belived you,
but after seeing it , well , it looks like you had it in your back pocket while you were been whipped with barbred wire by some Japanese girl..
Treat the new reader to a sturdy reinforced case .

^Yup, a good leather case helps a lot. Also feels like you're reading a real book as opposed to looking like Moses.

I have a Kobo, and have stopped downloading "updates" and other shite from the Kobo site, most of which seems designed to slow down and eventually kill off the reader.

That's the one drawback on the Kindle. Kindle till you die. The books won't display on a non Kindle. Most if not all of them are copy right protected and cannot (legally) be converted to another format.
