I have not seen Fargo II yet so I will not be posting here for a while but I look forward to joining this thread in the near future!

Why do you keep opening threads for the sake of it?

    Are you lonely?

Missus pissed off with the boyfriend or something?

    Fargo 2:

It starts with a lonely Cowboy gunned down in a robbery gone bad.

Then a down-on-his-luck New York cop gets stranded in Fargo, and falls in love with a homely milkmaid.

He discovers that the Cowboy's death was not an isolated incident, nor a robbery gone bad.

A serial killer prowls the streets of Fargo.

As bodies pile up around him, he races to find the killer before his beloved milkmaid is next.

    But he's too late.

In the final episode he finds her, throat cut and body bled dry, and in anguish, shoots himself in the head.

The serial killer, it transpires, was the milkman.

    The end.

The movie was brilliant. Will the series disappoint?
"True Crime' and 'Breaking Bad' were radically overhyped.

Nearly impossible to recreate a TV series from an iconic film, as the oppressed situation, content and language restrictions don't apply to film making.

Therefore, what is presented is the same old synthetic and sanitized pablum.

Amazed as to how some become so giddy and fanciful over television program that might be promoted as different, cutting edge, or daring - when none of it is. Just regurgitated shit.

    Conditioning is a powerful tool.

I also reckoned the film was really good. The slightly bumbling locals dealing with a pair of scumbag criminals made for a decent tale.

I was a bit wary of the series for much the same reasons that you and Jeff mention. I saw the first episode of the season 1 series in a bored moment whilst on a flight and found I enjoyed it, so bought the series 1 DVD.

Martin Freeman's plays his character (Lester Nygard) brilliantly. it's a similar character to the one played by William Macy in the film, a local guy who gets in over his head with an assassin, but it's different enough that it keeps the series as very much a separate story.

The character that got me absolutely hooked though was Lorne Malvo (Billy Bob Thornton). I really struggle to think of any character in either film or TV who was quite so believably evil as him. He is charming and intelligent when needed, yet utterly, utterly ruthless and completely without remorse. He enjoys creating trouble for people simply for the sake of it, even if the only gain he gets from it is the knowledge he's created hell for some random people. The peeing in the fuel tank scene (episode 1 I think) is an example of that.

I actually enjoyed the series every bit as much as the film, possibly more. The film was great in a sort of surprising, quirky one off way, but somehow it didn't have enough time to get the most out of the characters. The two criminals in the film were such out-and-out scumbags that I think I spent all the time wanting them to be caught.

Series 1 gives more time to everyone and as the series progressed I found myself hoping that Lorne Malvo didn't get caught, not just because it would prolong the entertainment, but in a weird way I found myself siding with him. He is in many ways remarkably similar to someone I used to work for and, if he hadn't taken up a career of murdering folks (Lorne Malvo that is, not my ex boss) I could easily imagine him as a high-flying senior partner in a legal firm, an investment banker, private equity investor or some such hard-headed type. Gordon Gekko with a gun.

If you enjoyed the film for the quirky Minnesotans, the scenery and the intrigue then my guess is you'll enjoy Fargo series 1. It's similar without trying to copy the film. If you enjoyed it simply for the two scumbag criminals then the criminal element in the series is very different.

Personally I'd strongly recommend series 1.

I've not yet seen series 2. Actually I didn't know it existed before I saw this thread.

..love the movie, watched it many times. Worked for a Minneapolis company and spent some time in the twin cities and the rural waste lands freezing my butt off ...brings back memories..
The characters' conversations and mind sets are not totally atypical.
    Is there a movie sequel?

Well, in my opinion, a disappointing EP10 conclusion to SEA2, especially after a kick-ass EP9.

Oh well, still the best show going....on to SEA3! (Next year...)

What a gay ending. Should have at least gave Mike Milligan and his honcho the crowning glory instead of sticking the poor fucker in an office job and ending with those 2 useless cops sipping beer and talking shite.

Still a classic but gotta wait until 2017 now for season 3

    ^2017????????????????? What happened to 2016?????????????

When they stuck Mike in his cubicle, was that an IBM Selectric II on the desk? "Not just for girls any more".

Also liked the 2 little kids fighting in the yard...and using sign language. The two killers from SEA1.....

I preferred the first season. Never knew what was gonna happen next with Malvo, in contrast this season was more predictable. I found it more sort of 'self consciously whacky'.

And by christ jeff is a twat.

^I liked them both, in quite different ways. I watched SEA2 a second time with my wife, and am now re-watching SEA1 with her and seeing things I missed the first time around. Both brilliant, other than the final EP in SEA2.

Another point of trivia I just realized. Remember the case full of cash the bully dug up in SEA1EP1 which he used to start up his trucking company?

That was the bulk of the buried ransom money from the kidnapping in Fargo the movie.

So the movie also ties in......

Episode ten was almost dreary, the worst one of all. Need to bring back the snow.

^Yep. Worst of all. Runner up was EP5, I think, where the action bounces back and forth...interrupted by the Reagan speech. Most irritating.
