Help please.......am stumped.

Bought a couple of new memory sticks to fill with HD videos for my girls new 51" TV, in her bar.
Downloaded only from Youtube, stuff like, 25 best goals, 25 fastest knockouts, etc.

Guess I now have about 50 of them ranging from a few seconds long to about 5 minutes. My PC uses windows XP.

Anyway,they will all play on my PC, so transferred to stick, and as a test, tried them in my other tower and my laptop. Some work some dont. So I put the stick back in the original PC ( tower type ) and bugger me some wont play there either ( from the stick ) even though thats the PC that transferred them to the stick in the first place............

Any ideas please??

Format the usb drive, copy a few files onto it, try them in the telly.

Is the tv Samsung? mine plays pretty much everything apart from some mp4.

An obvious answer maybe, but I'll say it anyways: make sure that all file types are supported. Better yet, identify that files that DO play, convert all others to same type- hope that works. Also some machines (tv/dvd players) only support a certain amount of usb storage. My cheapo dvd player has usb capabilities, but only UP to 8 Gb for some reason

We havent got as far as the TV, as above, they wont even play on the PC that created / transferred them to the memory stick in the first place..

That's a FAT thing. Yes, wrong format on some of the vids. You can DL converters.

I thought FAT was a 4GB limit and on each file?

Anyway, just because you can download and copy them on a PC, doesn't mean it will play them, although if you download VLC or MPCStar it probably will.

You need to look in your TV's manual (probably that means looking online) and look for a list of the formats it supports, then stick to that.

If you're struggling give me the make and model number and I'll have a look.

Just go to keep video on internet past You Tube address in and download with the file type you want.

I dont use MPC or VLC anymore, everything through XBMC, better quality, library and SUBTITLES are very clear.

I dont use MPC or VLC anymore, everything through XBMC, better quality, library and SUBTITLES are very clear.

I only use those to play stuff on the PC.

Your download vids from youtube are in FLV format and you need to convert them to mpg. You can do it with a free converter.

I use this one.

When installed click on the left hand sidebar at the top that says video, you will then get a list of video formats..click on mpg and a box will open up for you to place the files you want converted, drag and drop them into the box..click OK and it will take you back to the main interface with your files there, at the top of that click start and it will convert them. I believe all TV's that take a USB will play mpeg files, the two I have do.

Most TV's will only play avi files from a USB stick...convert then with Any Video Converter... Any Video Converter - CNET Download.com

Once downloaded just click on the Add Video File option and select your file,then make sure you convert to ..Customized AVI file (*avi ) ......which is an option in the top right-hand box.......The just click on 'Convert'.....simple

YouTube downloader automatically converts those FLV files to MP4 to watch through the usb port on your tv, that's if your TV supports MP4, if not then get a converter as mentioned above

If you want to view them on your PC, then use vlc player which plays FLV(flash video).

Bought a couple of new memory sticks ......

I always used Kingston sticks bought from Pantip on Ngamwongwahn road. Never has a problem.
Bought a Kingston from Chinatown.....complete fuck up. Tried every which way but anything that goes on the stick video wise won't play on anything, regardless of format.

Is it possible there are dodgy fake memory sticks about ?

Buying sticks anywhere in LoS make sure it has a hologram on the pack. The ones without hologram are copies, so you can get them real cheap and up to 1tb, which are great as long as you don't try to use them.

Tried 3 different memory sticks, all bought in the UK, where I live.
As far as I can see, all of the above answers do not explain why certain videos will not play from the stick, when plugged into the same PC that created them.

Lets make this clear, they will play from the PC hard drive, but not from a stick that was made from said hard drive.

What programs are you using to download and play these vids ?.

Go look at the properties on these videos and tell us what format they are in

Your hard drive may be using a different player to the one that plays when your memory stick is plugged in

Just as Dillinger says..you need to click on the video file and click properties and it will tell you what kind of file it is. If they are FLV files then they will not play in windows media player..you will need to get a new video player like GOM to play them on your computer. Also when you say they play on your computer do you mean they play on youtube on your computer or that actual files play by themselves when downloaded to your hard drive. Which media player is selected when you plug in the usb drive? Is it the same as the one that you played them on before?

They will play from my PC hard drive, VLC media player seems to have taken over everything I do, but works OK, as far as I can tell.

No point in sending the memory stick to the girlfriend to plug into her TV until I am happy it will work OK. Hence the testing on various towers and laptop here.

Just checked, properties.........VLC media file (.mp4)

all videos the same.
