    Apple TV

Yesterday I bought an Apple TV from MBK and I've got to say I'm very impressed with it. They are not available yet from the iStore but a few shops have them in MBK.

    3,500bt which isn't bad.

    US -$100 (3,000bt ish)
    UK - 100 pounds (4,500bt ish)

I'd say it's probably the best value Apple product about.

    It's pretty small too.

It's basically a media receiver that you connect to the TV with HDMI and to your sound system with an Optical Cable. Then from your TV screen you can control your music, movies and pics that are on your computer, over your wifi network. In other countries you can use Netfilx, Hulu etc but not here yet.

You can also mirror what ever is on your iphone, ipad or computer screen onto the TV. (This was the excuse I used to buy it so that he wife can watch her Thai Tv on it which she normally watches on her ipad.)

Yes, I tested it by streaming some porn from my phones browser. It works.

So far of the things I've tried:

    Music -

Streams seamlessly with no pauses or skipping that I've had with other apps. Nice to have all my music on some decent surround speakers now.

    Movies -

I've watched a couple of shows today that are on my computer and again they streamed perfectly with no fuck ups.

You can set your torrent download program to automatically put all your TV shows into iTunes so after that you don't need to bother even touching the file. It goes straight to your TV.

You can download movies from the iStore but I haven't tried it. Rent is $4.99 for new movies and $3.99 for old ones.

I watched a couple of trailers and they were in HD and came down really fast.

    Games:

I tried playing a game off my iphone on the big screen using the iphone as the controller but there was a bit of lag and it felt a bit strange.

Also you can control the Apple TV with your iphone which is handy as I've lost that tiny little controller a few times today.

I was in pantip the other day and they were selling Android Boxes for the TV.

    I'm guessing it's the same(ish) system?

    2500bt or thereabouts.

    you should be shot !!!

can it play any kind of AVI or H264 files ? I think Macs have problem running those,

so basically it's a HDMI box that connects to a PC through Wifi ?

I think I got a media box for 40 USD and it worked also with USB and it can stream HD movies through Wifi

but the mac mini is doing all this quite nicely with PLEX in HD

It plays MP4 but Vuse can convert the AVI's.

Whats H264? I've got an episode of top Chef that is H264.mp4. It plays that.

for the mac mini, I had to install all kind of additional codecs to play everything I would get from the web, that is AVI, H264 etc... not the silly QT format in MP4

but the silly "iShow" media player (same as AppleTV) software included with the mac mini wouldn't play any of it for some reasons

only Plex on the top of the MacOS X had to be installed so it could replace the stupid default apple software,

no need to "translate" MP4 files into AVI, with the right codecs, PLEX will take everything

mp4 is the QT container, H264 is the compression format

some media players may not recognize the mac MP4 container

Cheers I'll look into Plex. You can Jail break the Apple TV as well (not sure about 3rdGen ones) so I'll have a go and see what it does.

Dickhead! She's away on work. I might re-box it before she gets back and give it to her as a prezzie.

Why not just run a HDMI cable from your PC to TV ? Or just plug an external drive into your TV ?
OR USE THAT PS3 THAT'S BANG SMACK IN FRONT OF YOUR TV

You're in Thailand, why not just give her the bloody TV Remote ?

Why the fuck would you want to see whats on your phone on your TV ?

Here's an experiment for you, hold your phone at arms length, play a Movie on it, now tell us which is the bigger screen, TV or iPhone ?

Now imagine whats bigger, The Missus iPad or TV ?

Because they are about 10 feet from each other.

Because I'd have to walk over to the computer to do that. And back again.

Until now I've been using that but the streaming skips sometimes and you can't pause it. Plus you have to go over to the computer and drag and drop the file. I'm not walking all the way over there!

I've got the Roku 3 and the Apple TV but have yet to unbox either.

    Bloody impulse purchases.
