    Samsung EX1

I had to get a new camera since my two Olympus travel cameras finally pooped out. (E-300, SW725) They lasted a good while and endured a lot of rough travel.

I wanted just one basic camera that did it all.

So after much research I settled on the Samsung EX1.
The camera market has changed a lot in the past 5 years. The point and shoot market especially. They call this high end point shoot market the enthusiast camera.

Pretty nice bit of kit it is, real solid and really fast compared the cameras I was used to. I like the tilt swivel LCD after getting used to it.

I even got a good deal on it from Big Camera in Ranong. I first tried to buy one a couple months ago. They had a price listed of 16800. I offered 15000 explaining that the model was 2 two years old already. They wouldn't budge, I walked.
After more study and when my 2nd camera kicked the bucket I was desperate for a new camera and the EX1 fit my needs.
Anyway I popped back by the Big Camera the other day and they'd dropped the price to 13800! I didn't have to think long!

My first few pics were pretty descent. It's really easy to use, I was kinda worried about having to re-learn a whole new camera, this one is much easier than the Olympus to control.

^Indeed that's one of the reasons I got it; for the fast lens. Some say it doesn't make much difference but I always thought the faster the lens the better.

Overall the camera is reminiscent of the old rangefinder Leica's, both in quality and the lens.

I got 2 samsungs, a 4 mp with a schneider lense, and a newer version with 8mp but samsung lense, for quality of photos and sharpness and colour, the old 4mp out does the newer samsung every time.

Thanks for the heads up Earl.

I have been looking at an S95/100 or an LX3/5 but this is a contender I had not noticed.

Swivel screen is great for taking sneaky shots of folk when they think you are just fiddling with your camera.

Has a lovely 1,18 lens, nice and bright !
Looks tough too Earl , no-one could accuse you of having a gay looking camera.

I had a 3 million pixel camera years ago that took at least as good as my newer 14 one, now I ought to be able to enlarge the shots 4 timers more - but even that does not seem to be the case.
Though the new ones is way faster at start up , focusing, between shots and longer zoom etc

Yea the EX1 is definitely a contender in this market.

I think the only real shortcoming it may or may not have is the lack of HD video, which seems to to be an issue for many. I don't shoot much video so it's not an issue. It does shoot VGA video and seems to do that well.

What's slick is you can start shooting video with the touch of one button. You don't have to enter a menu or turn a dial. Also while shooting video from the one touch mode you can still snap still photos! Pretty slick.
I'm really impressed with how easy it is to navigate the controls of this camera.
That and the quality, it is built like a brick shithouse, feels really solid!
