    UBC AV Quality

I'm just wondering about the range of audio/video quality of various UBC (satellite) channels. For example, the Hallmark channel is quite good and looks really great on our 720p/1080i TV. Plus, it has five channel surround sound. At the same time AXN sucks, looks like it came from a poor quality VCD and has mono sound

If UBC is able to broadcast high resolution video on some channels, why doesn't it do so on all of them. Or, is this based on the video they're fed by the various networks?

Not really an answer sorry but friend of mine recently purchased the 'Latest & Greatest' Plasma screen HD-TV (for the price of a small country) and UBC looks bloody awful on it.

It's clearly tied to the broadcast quality as you mention - HD broadcasts are still a bit of a novelty in the West so imagine it will be sometime until they reach these fair shores.

A few months ago I would have said the same thing. But, when I got back from my holiday in the US I noticed that a few channels seemed to have dramatically improved.

I don't know if this is due to the satellite switch (more bandwidth) or something else, but it's quite noticeable.

Really? Will have to check it out - maybe they have changed the broadcast somehow. I notice that they've been 'reallocating' channels recently as well (whatever that means), maybe it has something to do with that?

Not really to phased at lack of HD broadcasts, although it would be nice, as barely watch UBC anymore as it has turned to crapola - and besides which you can always get HD DVD's and the like.

Well, I've been sick in bed the last two days so I've stuffed myself with crapola; the only redeeming feature of which has been the improved video quality!
