    Margarine vs Butter

Some 30 years ago, i remember at home the mother stopped using butter for MARGARINE, the magic new butter, less calories, less this and that and much cheaper as well...

Some years after margarine was hell and bad, cannot remenber why !

Here in the Phils much easier to find Margarine so i had it this last days, the taste is really not as good as butter, the price is half, but i miss the tast of butter and will abandon margarine.

What was or is so bad with margarine ? (out of the taste that has been cleared already! )

I think there is some health issue related to margarine...

Hey I just googled margarine vs butter and the results are kinda disturbing

Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back. It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavorings.

DO YOU KNOW...the difference between margarine and butter? Read on to the end...gets very interesting! Both have the same amount of calories. Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams. Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study. Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods... Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few only because they are added! Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods. Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years. And now, for Margarine...

Very high in trans fatty acids. Triple risk of coronary heart disease. Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol) and increases the risk of cancers up to five fold. Lowers quality of breast milk. Decreases immune response. Decreases insulin response. And here's the most disturbing fact.... HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!
Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC!!! This fact alone was enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance). You can try this yourself: Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things:

    * no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something)
    * it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value
    * nothing will grow on it, even those teeny weenie microorganisms will not a find a home to grow.

Why? Because it is nearly plastic. Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

Spreadable margarine is healthier than butter. Margarine is made from vegetable oil, butter is made from animal fat. Margarine does not contain cholesterol while butter contains a lot. For people with high levels of cholesterol butter is not a healthy choice.

Your body can "process" butter easier than margarine. I remember nearing than margarine is on molecule away from being plastic. Not sure where I heard it though.

Lots of info here: I can't believe it's not

in particular this quote ''Originally developed by a French chemist in the late 19th century, margarine was a response to a call from the French government to invent a cheap, long-life butter substitute that could feed its armies on the march. When the Dutch took up the process they imported rendered animal fat from the notorious Chicago meatpacking yards. ''

French and Cloggie with a bit of help from the Merkins?.......there is no way such a combination is good for you!!!

Handy hint: Use a latex free condom if you're going to use either as a lube as they cause latex condoms to break.

In fact all cholesterol is not created equal.

This might article be a wee bit complicated but it may in the future help prevent you from appearing like a moron.

Cholesterol can't dissolve in the blood. It has to be transported to and from the cells by carriers called lipoproteins. Low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, is known as "bad" cholesterol. High-density lipoprotein, or HDL, is known as "good" cholesterol. These two types of lipids, along with triglycerides and Lp(a) cholesterol, make up your total cholesterol count, which can be determined through a blood test. LDL (Bad) Cholesterol
When too much LDL (bad) cholesterol circulates in the blood, it can slowly build up in the inner walls of the arteries that feed the heart and brain. Together with other substances, it can form plaque, a thick, hard deposit that can narrow the arteries and make them less flexible. This condition is known as atherosclerosis. If a clot forms and blocks a narrowed artery, heart attack or stroke can result.
    HDL (Good) Cholesterol
About one-fourth to one-third of blood cholesterol is carried by high-density lipoprotein (HDL). HDL cholesterol is known as "good" cholesterol, because high levels of HDL seem to protect against heart attack. Low levels of HDL (less than 40 mg/dL) also increase the risk of heart disease. Medical experts think that HDL tends to carry cholesterol away from the arteries and back to the liver, where it's passed from the body. Some experts believe that HDL removes excess cholesterol from arterial plaque, slowing its buildup.
    Triglycerides
Triglyceride is a form of fat made in the body. Elevated triglycerides can be due to overweight/obesity, physical inactivity, cigarette smoking, excess alcohol consumption and a diet very high in carbohydrates (60 percent of total calories or more). People with high triglycerides often have a high total cholesterol level, including a high LDL (bad) level and a low HDL (good) level. Many people with heart disease and/or diabetes also have high triglyceride levels.
    Lp(a) Cholesterol
Lp(a) is a genetic variation of LDL (bad) cholesterol. A high level of Lp(a) is a significant risk factor for the premature development of fatty deposits in arteries. Lp(a) isn't fully understood, but it may interact with substances found in artery walls and contribute to the buildup of fatty deposits.
Anyway there are good and bad oils.

    • Good Cooking Oils:

      • canola oil
      • flax seed oil
      • peanut oil
      • olive oil
      • non-hydrogenated soft margarine
      • safflower oil
      • sunflower oil
      • corn oil

Trans fatty and normal fatty acids should be enough to put anyone off eating margarine or any other food product for that matter.

They mess up the appetizing hormone suppressors.

I thought it was obvious I was talking about bad cholesterol in butter but I will spell it out for you. Soft margarine does not contain transfat. Does anyone actually eat stick margarine anymore? Transfat is used to make stick margerine hard. Butter contains bad cholesteral from animal fat. Check with your cardiologist before you make a fool of yourself.

I always substitute olive oil for any recipe that calls for margarine or butter. For toast I use butter, because in moderation it's not a problem.

It's very strange that the French would develop it for their armys to be out on the march.

You would have thought that butter would have a perfectly good shelf life for their campaigns.

What was obvious is that you seemed to fit the modern ill informed stereotype of people who think all cholesterol is bad.
If I was wrong I tender my humble apology.

Intelligent people take the time to make the distinction that some fats are indeed good for you and butter isn't necessarily so bad. Eggs aren't so bad for you as the cholesterol nazis used to think.

I don't trust the claims that margarine is any good. I avoid using it and also avoid too much butter. My heart's just fine. Regular exercise and laughing at stupid health fad fanaticsm's is probably more conducive to stable health than being obsessed with cholesterol intake.
