Ajinomoto to produce seasonings in Thailand

TOKYO — Ajinomoto Co will build a new plant in Thailand to produce ‘‘umami’’ seasonings in response to increasing demand for food products in Southeast Asia.

Ajinomoto plans to invest about 14.7 billion yen, or 5.39 billion baht, in the new plant, located in Ayutthaya Province, close to Bangkok.

The plant will begin operation in March 2013 at an annual pace of 60,000 tons.

Ajinomoto’s global ‘‘umami’’ seasonings production will expand by 10%.

The plant, operated by Ajinomoto’s Thai subsidiary, will employ some 150 workers.

Umami, also referred to as savoriness, is one of the basic tastes sensed by specialized receptor cells present on the human and animal tongue.

Umami (旨味?) is a loanword from Japanese meaning "good flavor" or "good taste" (noun).

Ajinomoto is an odd company with their use of MSG and aspartame. I interviewed them at the "Food and Sustainability" conference last year. Every other food and ingredients specialist were confused as to why they were promoting these ingredients.

Ajinomoto claim it's the way MSG is used and the how unami influences flavor - glutamic acid (Glutamate) and the 20 natural amino acids found in nature which they claim is a necessity of life.

As far as I know, MSG has never been used in traditional French cuisine and never anybody said it's tasteless ...

MSG.............I have been told I am allergic to the stuff and have to stay away from any food that contains it including most street cooked Thai food.
