How not to make pea soup

Now I have never made pea soup before and the only reason I have made it was because I left the bag of peas out of the freezer for a few hours and it says not to refreeze, I should also mention that I dont particularly like pea soup and have only ever had it once when I thought it was quite nice, beleive it or not that was down some restaurant in Soi Diamond, I should also mention that this bag of peas has been in my freezer for over a year now.

Any at first I thought I would go for a delicate flavour with a couple of chillies and some garlic.

Here we have my potatoes boiling with salt, pepper, parsley and a bay leaf, sounds pretty good so far.

Onion, garlic ready to be lightly fried, note one of the Thai broth packets, got to admit at this time I wasn't sure how I was going to get these into the mix.

This is where things started to go wrong a little bit and the plans had to be changed, ok so you got to mush all this stuff up, so it's time to start chucking it into the liquidiser machine, so you got all the bottom stuff mushed up and in a gooey mess, but now all the top bits are stuck to the sides, this was becoming a real mess, I was only trying to do a small amount each time and then trying to get the slop out, an easy way round this is to chuck some water in there, shame they didn't mention that on any of the recipes I read, by now of course the mixer is a poxy mess, where I have been poncing aroud with it the O ring at the bottom wouldn't seat properly, so now the gunge and stuff is all over the place, okay so I get most of it in bowls and the other liquidiser thingy and start doing it properly.

The potatoes came out great, and what I could scrape out of the liquidiser would be good Mash, it was the peas where it all went wrong, maybe I should have cooked them or something first.

So now I got it cooking and it smells very strongly of peas, peas don't actually smell or taste very nice, so I decided to be a bit more adventerous, more chilli, ketchup, worcestshire sauce, cummin, pepper, tumeric powder, was going to chuck some mango chutney in there but that had gone bad, have had a couple of spoons of it and it just tastes of spicey hot peas, got to find something else to kill the pea flavour a bit.

God damn, been making and eatin Pea Soup most of my life and I never heard of nothing like that tho..

When we was in Pattaya a couple of days last year I saw some Split Peas in a market so bought 6- 400 gr. bags of em along with a dozen bags of Pinto Beans to bring home.

Anyway, Chop 250 gr of bacon, unless you can find a couple of Ham Hocks, and kinda fry a small chopped onion in a little butter til tender with your Ham Hocks, some salt and pepper to taste and dump in the dried split peas and a quart or so of water and simmer for a couple hours til the ham hocks are done and cut the meat off the bones and throw back in the pot, shread a little bit of carrot and throw it in the pot to add color and then eat it, have to watch and cook on a low heat and adjust the liguid, and stir it often to keep from sticking. Split Pea Soup is not a real techno item to make, Dutchers have been doing it for the last 1000 years.

Now if ya want POTATO soup, I make a mean one, even my Thais like it..
Got Bacon, Eggs, Onions, Spuds and milk in it..

DD, Please splain to me why pea soup shouldn't taste like peas. Shit you could have taken the recipe from my thread and just thrown in the peas.

What a flocking hash you've made of it so far.... will be interested in see how you get it to your liking...

Maybe just throw it out and do something you know????

    E. G.

EDIT: If you succeed in getting this mess to smell/taste like clam chowder let me know...

A packet of smoked bacon should improve the flavour.

Alternatively mix soup with equal amount of either tomato or chili ketchup.

It's a big pot though stroller, ie about a gallon of the gungy stuff, I stuck it in cartons this morning and froze it so I don't have to think about it for a while, got to clean up all the foking mess I made in the kitchen aswell today, it's bloody everywhere, I shall probably make it into tomato soup, use the pea soup as a thickerner, damn sure I aint putting nice expensive bacon into this mess I have made.

I always thought you made pea soup from dried split peas, not frozen ones.
BG's recipe sounds like the right one and similar to that I use.
Still reading of your efforts DD, its good to hear of someone who makes me feel halfway competant in the kitchen.
I feel better but still won't post any photo's of the Bagels I just finished making, fvck me they looked 'orrible, although tasted Ok.

Thaw out one of your cartons and add some canned ham and throw it in your smoker. Should do you just fine and get rid of the pea taste....

    E. G.

EDIT: Better yet throw in a can of spam instead of the ham, that'll cure the pea taste.

"Kasseler", goes well with Sauerkraut, or cubed in bean stews - preferably made from fresh broad beans.

So thats what mushy peas are,, now I know I don't want any, I buy those nice NZ frozen peas at lotus and put some in one of my nice encapsulated bottom SS pots, little salt and a hunk of butter and turn the fire on low til they start to steam, they fine to eat with a steak.

I can't get those smoked pork chops here but they sure would go well with Kraut, which I just made 4 gallons of after supper, we been out for awhile now and we eat it with steamed pork ribs a lot as the Thai love it.

But when I get my brick oven smoker built you can bet your ass there will be nice smoked loin chops on my table often., pobly have to get the MORTONS tender quik or sugar cure sent over from the states tho.

No, mushy peas are like very thick pea soup. Made with dried peas.

At home, I make my pea soup with bacon bones, the ribs that the bacon has been cut from.
