Gang Hanglay or Gaeng Hang Lae

Rumour has it that our one diceman (CMN) will cook up a storm and show us all how it is done.

For you heathans out there that don't know what it is, it is sometimes called Burmese Curry or Northern Thai Pork Curry. It's a bloody beaut and prolly my favorite Thai dish.

^ you will have to hassel cmn to get his arse into gear.

Most good cooks in Lanna Thai, the North of Thailand, have their own, tried and tested recipe for this mildly spicy signature dish of Lanna. It was originally adopted from the Burmese during their occupations of the North between the 16th century and the 18th and is now frequently found served at important events, weddings, funerals and temple fairs etc. around the north.

We've got a restaurant here in Korat that does a few Northern dishes including Khao Soi and Gaeng Hang Lae. Both are excellent. The Khao Soi is only 40 baht and the Gaeng Hang Lae is 80 baht. Restaurant is Sarungkham.

The difference in the price must be the prep.I had a Khao Soi in a little village just south of Mai Sai...totally different to the creamy one we get around here.nice, but had lots of tree bits (Well it looked like that)

The Khao Soi at this place has noodles, curry, three chicken legs, dry noodles on top and a garnish of onions and pickles with some lime to squeeze on. I have no idea how they sell all this for 40 baht, which includes free ice tea as well.

The Gaeng Han Lae has a good portion of pork and a lovely curry, but the rice is extra.

The first time Ms. B and I ordered two bowls of curry and two plates of rice the proprietor was astounded and clarified at least twice that we really wanted "song chut"....

    Well, we are spendthrifts.
