Now for 5 Baht per Avocado I am locking forward to some nice meals... must have bought at the wrong time then, thanks for the head up
Living in that neck of the woods I can answer..which is no, they aren't..come September/October you'll find them in the markets here, 40bt for a kilo of the nicest avocados I've tasted..lots of them will come from the Pak Chong Research Station (Korat Province) where they also sell the grafted plants for 50 bt each, I bought four, which are all holding their own, but not before the chap in the research station gave me a guided tour of the avocado plantation and a bin bag full of freebies which he plucked off the trees as we were strolling round..well worth a visit if you fancy trying your luck at growing.Originally Posted by Norton
Rim Png in CM has them all year too, but they are 50 baht each and imported and very poor quality..
Yeah, now they are 69 baht each at Foodland. Later, when they are in peak season, the price comes down to about 39 baht. But they still can't give them away at my Foodland on Ladprao because the Thais have no use for them.
Once I found the big ones like Blackgang's at the Huay Kwang market. They were dirt cheap.
Solly....see slapper answered above but.Originally Posted by Norton
Not quite. He's talking about the imported ones I believe.Originally Posted by Nawty
On left side of highway at Muak Lek, heading toward Saraburi, just before the start of the down hill bit, there is a fruit market where I pick up local avocados. Was there about 3 weeks ago and they said out of season, come back in a couple of months. Very good avocado and cheap.

I think Slapper is talking about the local ones. The night market at Pak Chomg is then full of them, cheap and he said in Oct/Nov....But hope you are right also as I want to buy a pile and I know the market you mention, drive past it every weekend.
I like poisoning my neighbours dogs till they die cos I'm a cnut
A bit off topic but a friend of mine has a restaurant named Lex's on the right about 1km before the market, next to the Toyota dealer. Try it sometime, think you will like it.
Shall do, we are often looking for somewhere to eat on that side on way home.....nearly bought our car from that toyota shop
Nope, the ones grown in the area here.Originally Posted by Norton

Is it the brick building ? Its the only one I saw next to toyota and before it.
What food do they do ?
I prefer outdoor dining but...this place looks all closed in......maybe to upmarket for us lot..
The only Lex's I know here is just past the Isuzu garage and hospital as your going towards Khao Yai and tesco but on the other side of the road down a small soi..it's pretty well sign posted.Originally Posted by Nawty
There is a 2 story building in front but the restaurant is behind it on the right with parking just before a small security booth. Lots of outdoor eating area and not hi so. Reasonable prices for "western" food. Very good steaks along with a good selection of other dishes. The owner is a Thai who worked for 40 years in the F&B department for Hilton in the US.Originally Posted by Nawty

^ Ahh.gotcha..that's in Muak Lek, not Pak Chong...couldn't suss out your Toyota dealership bit. In Pak Chong the Toyota garage is surrounded by houses of ill repute, so I've been told anyway.

A couple planted av trees many years ago on Samui. Sold for about Bt10 apiece til some wanklette said they were worth way more. I think it's about seven years for them to bear fruit. Never seen them the size of BG's pick tho. Wow. Good for guac. About $0.79-0.89 right now for one small av.

Saw avocados at $4 each in a supermarket in Melbourne 3 weeks ago. Can't imagine that's normal.
