    Bananas and spuds

The potatoes at my local market are irregular, scarred and hideously deformed, so no potatoes for me this week.

    Bananas?

You can only get them in a bunch of five which have to be eaten the same day unless you like squigy, blackened, sickly sweet bananas or they come in a bunch of ten plus which are green, unblemished and will be ready to eat in a fortnight.

Fuck this market and fuck Carrefour, the greedy French arseholes - not content with being multi billionaires they want to build 200 new stores in China over the next five years, and their potatoes are also rubbish - you can squeeze them which means they are old and they are all pigmies and often have big black eyes or some sort of blight inside.

How can you get grumpy over veggies and fruit? If you don't like them there, go elsewhere. Not worth a stress heart attack.

Apologies for my language, and yes I am a bit jaded. I've decided it's my last year here so I should enjoy what I can.

The spuss are pretty crap at the moment, but they'll be OK in a couple of months. The bananas are pretty good up here at the moment. Maybe you'll have to buy them in Udon?

mash the nanas up with a bit of cream or yoghurt

Spuds . mash them up with a bit of cream or yoghurt and some chopped up onions and garlic and chilies and then make then into burger sized thingies and fry them in your non stick pan. with a bit of your extra extra virgin oil. and a bitta butter.

Instead of yhoghurt you could use creme fraiche or even sour cream.

^ Was I asking you for your recipe ideas? ..No, but thanks anyway, have a green - I will try the yoghurt thing and mashed bananas, though can't I just chop the banana and put it in a bowl covered in yoghurt? I can mash them with my teeth.

Salad, mmm I'd love a nice mixed bag from Sainsbury's with rocket and baby spinach but can't get that here, only loso veggies in the markets of Bangkok.

Scamp, buy your bananas on the street. Get the ones that aren't gassed- even if they are green (which I almost never see- on Thonglor, even) they won't take long to ripen.

When I saw "bananas and spuds" for some reason I thought the thread might be about plantains, which is something I eat a lot of in Florida. They are like the banana version of a spud- a spudnana? - and the Cubans sure do have some interesting ways of preparing them.

Me too, I love Plantains, some of the villages in southern mexico only had plantains and no platanos,, I fry them with a bit of raw sugar or oven roast like a spud and serve with butter melted in em and a tad of strawberry jam.
Funny they don't have them here,, but a Thai would not know how to cook em if they couldn't call it curry and make it taste like shit and lemon grass.

I always go from the unripened green bananas as I eat them slow, thus allowing to mature.

As for spuds Scamp, I bought a couple of bags from Villa on Thonglor the other day, although not the largest they were ''chippable''.

Both are perfectly okay for throwing at people from your balcony.

And lodging in various vehicle exhaust pipes.

Cheap wholesome fun, plus it impresses the ladies. Wot's the big deal?

I pull off two or three bananas from the bunch -- can't you do that? Anyway, can't believe you shop at those supermarkets when you get fresher stuff and better prices at the wet market.

^ agree, I hate shopping at Big C, its never a pleasant experience, but they do consistently have the best spuds, Makro sometimes as Tescos, Carrefour, the produce buyer should be hung by his testicles.

Well Y'all just wait til they get some Netted Jems or Russets over here from Washington, Idaho or Oregon state and then you will have a decent spud, Top baking potatoes in the world and a spud that will not sprout on the way home from the store and be full of those Black shit trails from nematodes in em.
