    Marmite's Beef & Beer Stew

There was a bit of a nip in the air today (my lodger left the fekkin' air-con on all night! Grrrr!) so I decided to treat you all to a taste of heaven; my Beef & Beer Stew.

First I went to Tops and bought everything. We have the beef marinading in balsalmic vinegar and mixed herbs.

And we have a large carrot, one spud, one yam, some fairly mild chillis, some mushrooms and a large onion. I will fry the asparagus in butter as a side dish.

Most importantly is the gravy, especially the beer part of it. Lookie what I found in the fridge!

Chop up one of the chillis....

And pan fry the beef to seal it with the chopped up chilli and a spoonful of mixed herbs.

Now, transfer to a big pot and add the gravy and 3 quarters of a pint of beer. Simmer for about 45mins.

This gives you time to chop up the veges. The potatoes & carrots will go in at the 40 min mark followed by the mushrooms about 20-30 mins later. I will leave it for a further 20 mins before serving.

lookin' mighty fine there, Marmite. You eat the whole damn thing only then remembering to take a pic of the finished product?

Love a good beer based stew. This one looks damn good.

Makes me hungry looking at the pics.

What do serve with it? Not steamed rice, I hope?

It is still cooking! GoW is not a very patient person. She doesn't understand that the best things take time.

I will cook the asparagus in a minute.

    *BURP!*

    Mmmm, that's better.

OK, so I fried up the asparagus in a bit of olive oil, butter and some finely chopped up chillis.

And, at last the stew was ready to serve. The smell in the kitchen was rather special too.

I warmed up some old rye bread in the microwave and we were ready to eat.

    A close up.

Nearly done. That bread was a damn fine idea.

    Fek me, I'm stuffed.

Adding chillis to it was a masterstroke. It really pepped it up. You could still taste the beer ok and the gravy was perfect for taste and thickness. I might have to do another one next year.

Tried to green you mate, but it wouldn't let me (as I have to spread the love around).

Looks like I'll just have to green GoW instead for eating what you dished up

Looks like it is time for me to clean up my Kitchen yet again and cook some food, the last few weeks I have been buying frozen chips just to have something in the freezers to keep electric costs down.
OK it looks like a curry, a stew, a chilli and a spaghetti all done on the same day, should get about 20 portions out of that so that will keep me going for a while.

Erm marmite, are those plastic plates you are eating from? Nothing against plastic plates and that, but they are a bit tacky to say the least to put good food into.

My son just brought me up my dinner, I assumed he was taking the piss, rice and little fish, I mean I don't mind whitebait and that, but these were about 10cms long without their heads, the normal ones the Thais eat, I have never bothered trying to eat them, it turns out that this was actually supposed to be for me, so now they are both sulking downstairs cos I never ate it, I mean fok me I have never eaten that stuff, why would I start now?

It did look damn good. Squirrel I make mine with pork as nobody save me in the house eats beef. Use a shoulder or a butt of pork, and its damn near as good.

The gravy tasted great, so there was no need. I reckon than enything tastes great with real beer in it. Shame you can't buy any in Australia.

The first meal my missus ever cooked for me was those little fish vegatales and noodles.

I fucking hate those little fish. It makes me shudder thinking about touching them.

Needless to say the missus cried her eyes out and I felt like a cuint.

    Fucking horrible things.

i can totally believe it ! me missus is the same.

"i can only eat farang food nid noi - then i hungry again!"

i used to meet her for lunch everyday - we'd swap around different places different food - i found out later that if it was a farang food day - she would duck down to the local noodle shop at about 11.30 to eat before meeting me half an hour later for lunch !

    cheeky gits they are!

Don't know if you can call that normal, my gf is equally weird
Same procedure , once every month.
We go to a swiss restaurant cause she is longing for their pork steak with spinnache, potatoes and tasty mushroom sauce.
I finnish mine in 20 minutes and she is struggling another 10 minutes to eat all of hers.
After getting home it takes an hour and she is out in the garden for a papaya and then starts to make Som Tam
May the bridges I burn light my way
