    The Som Tam thread

Do you like somtam? Seems like and integral part of thai life.
I think life here without somtam might come to a screeching halt.

I like mine phet nitnoy with kao niaow!
I'm addicted I eat it nearly everyday. I think all those fresh papaya enzymes are getting me high!

Love it ... the spicier the better. You should try it with a side dish of bacon to munch on.

It's not so popular here in the central region, but I do like it as "gap gem" (the dishes of food you all share while getting pissed) "moo nam tok" (spicy pork salad) goes nice with it and of course sticky rice although this is generaly left out while your on the piss. I'm probably moderate spicy now up from not spaicy at all years ago.
I have more than the average number of arm and legs

Myself, I like Somtum but not as much as "Tum Sua". It's like Somtum but put "Khanom Jean" with it too.

I had some the other day. It was pretty basic no string bean, carrot or crab. I saved the juice and whipped up a quick noodle soup.

I'll eat Som Tam Thai but the one with all the bits of crab in it is the pits.

I like it too, but sometimes the crab bits bite me, so shrimp is better

    I love Kao Soy though.

As for beer food, we get some BBQ dried beef and pork, together with BBQ sticky rice cakes, ace!!

Yea I often have the crispy pork rinds with it.

I've only once had carrot somtam in a terrific restaurant there in CM along the river. (the place with the great music, Lanna Cummings mother's place I think)

    The big place?

That's the Riverside Restaurant, and very fine it is too.

No not the riverside. This a small thai restaurant on other side of the river. They play traditional thai music upstairs. I think the lady who owns it is Lanna Cummings mother. The mom sings too and is quite good.

And the food is really worth the visit too.

Been there a few times. They found an unexploded (but tirggered) grenade just outside the place last week. They've had a pretty goog bluesman there couple of times I was there; he was Thai, but the Guitar was definitely Mississippi.

Back to Som Tam. Not a big fan. Had the "very best ever" Som Tam prepared by a very drunk Lao man in KornGaen, at soe big fair five, or six years ago, he passed out shortly after serving us. It was too spicey for all but one of the Thai folks there. We got all four servings.

When it's made right the crabs give it a hint of that fresh, ocean breeze sort of flavor similar to good fresh oysters. 90% of the stuff made on the streets is crap. Good treatment for constipation should you ever suffer.
I prefer a good Yum Nua. Lotsa chilies. Chewy Thai beef.
All them veggies and fuit in Som Tam; chick food.

I love Som Tom and also the variety that's made with cucumber - can't recall the name... the mother-in-law make a mean dish of it!

We can't get any decent papaya down here on the South Island so my wife substitutes Granny Smith apples. The green apples make a pretty good yum. Nice with a Monteith's Summer Ale.

Use your Thai phonetic sense. I am just trying to convey what the kids said.
