    Odds n Ends

Thai Pom is an unusual Brit. He likes food that hasn't been boiled or mashed or squashed or greased, in other words he likes real food. O'course he's been here for 20 some odd years so he ain't really a Pom anymore.

Yesterday he toiled all day over a large pot of chili and beans, he does do good chile and great stews.

It ain't the chili I am writing about though. Yesterday the three ladies (we had guests from Vietnam) were sitting on the mat eating two different styles of Sam Tom, don't ask me what was in it.

I noticed that they were also eating a bowl of chili with it. Now that's fusion.. lol

I'm sure many of you have seen the odd occasion where Thai and western dishes are unexpectedly combined for a meal. I would love to hear about these.

We have a lot of (unintentional) fusion food, Kids and I love nam tok Moo combined with Salad and basil leaves all wrapped in a Tortilla. Or Larb and salad sandwiches.

Is he prepared to share his recipe ? Just asking because I reckon I have the best recipe for Chilli, coincidently obtained from another person of the Pommy persuasion.

When I talk chili off I would think four or five of the finest chili connoisseurs would gather in a hot humid room surrounded by cases of iced Shingha and go at it...

No pain no gain sts. Get four or five BGs to taste the results and declare the winner.

Ok...there is no way that I know how to make a great meat pie, fish and chips...how in the heck can a Pom know anything about making good chilli?

Here is one that I'm told will get me a ton of reds from the Brits.....

Not sure if its Twiglets or Twizzlets or something similar that is a favorite snack on the Island that is home to a couple of countries. But I was recently chastised severely for dragging these little snacks through a pot of Stilton cheese.

My Gawd! you think I had pissed in the champagne. Actually it a very handy way to eat Stilton. Even the Ms. like them in this fashion.

Sadly enough I now fear my supply of Stilton is at grave risk. Seems its uncouth to vary the methods in which Stilton is consumed.

Although I guess Stilton on a pizza is perfectly cool the the pom.

^ Quite often sold in small pots around Xmas time by most major stores in the UK, and throughtout the rest of the year.

Are you talking cheese or foreskins?

I've only read about "pots of cheese". Honestly have never seen one though, thought it was an old fashioned, pre-cling wrap sort of thing.

I still try to but with all or most of the supermarkets now not having a cheese counter, everything is pre cut and packaged. Gone are the days when you could ask for a taste before you bought your cheese.

Didn't used to be almost obligatory to taste the cheese first? I'd bet most of the upper end places here would let you have a taste first.

I had a good time in Carrefour trying all their different sausages the other day. The 36B for 3 became 108B at the till. Oh well.

I'm not sure they would any more after the recent massive price increases on dairy products.

^Most do. I go to central world and paragon now for my cheeses...sadly these are the cheapest places to get the good stuff (that I know of yet.) I went to the gourmet market at paragon today and ate smoked tuna, salmon, pancetta and parms. I didn't buy anything, but I'm researching what I want to use. But if you just tell them to let you try it they usually will.
