Before parboiling, soak them in cold water for an hour or two. Sounds odd to soak in cold before boiling, counter-intuitive even, but the soaking gets rid of the excess sugars by osmosis which is neccessary for crispiness on the outside and also ensures nice fluffy inner spud.

^Didn't plan far enough ahead yesterday to do that...but good to know. Like Dillinger mentioned the type of potato probably makes a big difference too. I checked and those were Russets I used...from fish's neck of the woods.

I wouldn't mind having a smaller convection oven on hand though. I think what I'll do is wait until our current microwave bites the dust, then look into one of those hybrid convection microwaves. If they're still available. Would save some space.

I bought one thinking I could use it for both oven and microwave , but I am not yet sure it is worth it - only one setting for the grill part

I have not tried a combination cook yet though - more youtube vids needed

Was the cost quite a bit more than a regular microwave?

^Just took a quick look at Best Buy . com ... damn! Some of them cost about as much or more as I paid for the Samsung($629).

The lower cost models look pretty small. Can't justify spending that much on my end.

It's what I've got (mentioned in an earlier post, I think). Very so-so. Microwave is fair to middling, oven is a bit disappointing. And it was pricey.
Don't get one. A dedicated microwave and a dedicated oven is what I wish I'd bought.

I can add to the chorus.

Our combined grill / oven / microwave became just a microwave after a couple of attempts about 10 years ago.

At that job it is still going strong.

^ & ^^ Thanks. Think I'll pass on that hybrid idea then.

May look for a small convection oven in the style my M-I-L has. They're a more reasonable cost and could sit on top my microwave. Hers works pretty well.

That's another thing; my hybrid is a bulky beast and takes up a lot of bench space, so naturally things are put on top of it. If you like your plastic stuff to melt, do that.

I found it at the back of a cupboard. It's a Nesco MII CrispyII. I found the instruction book as well. Looks like there are a couple of bits missing but not essential. I'll have to find something to cook.

A chicken will fit but it'll have to wait, the wife won't be too happy if I nick a hen from the garden. Meantime, I'll try chips later.

Might do one tomorrow now that I'm thinking of it.

But horrors of horrors, fookin' Makro corrected the price of the 2L of white from 350b to 750b.

Knew I should bought 200 liters of it.

Cook one in your own oven, you lazy fucker.

Anyway, I haven't seen any whole chickens for sale recently.

I might try a rib eye steak in my Otto on Saturday.
