    "Hash browns" humble taters...

How does everyone else here in far flung locations interpret hash browns?

I'm not fixing any at the moment so I don't have a personal pic, but here is how I as a kid understood hash browns:

Usually with finely diced onions in the mix.

In what ways, shapes or forms do others view as proper hash browns?

^So we agree that the "hash browns" pictured in your breakfast sandwich on the Manwich thread are not proper hash browns?

Me? I like 'em cooked up like a crispy pile of straw. Salt and then more than a few lusty shakes of Tabasco.

No, we don't. You posted a picture of pommes lyonnaise.

A Hash, as it relates to food, is a course mixture. Comes from the French hacher, which means "to chop". Brown means it has been browned. The processed shit I posted are riced and chopped potato (no doubt plus a load of other shit merkin companies like to add) mixed together and browned. So although they are shit hash browns, hash browns they are.

I would much prefer to eat the pommes lyonnaise you suggest, but that would need to be a in a thread not about Hash Browns perhaps? Seeing as they are not Hash Browns?

    Savvy?

Made them for breakfast just this morning with poached eggs. Yum.

    My method:

Shread potatoes then soak them in cold water a few minutes to get the starch out. Rinse.
Put the taters on a clean cloth, roll them up, and squeeze the water out.
Place the taters in a bowl. Add a few sprinkles of beef seasoning.
Heat oil in fry pan. Pick up a handful and drop it in one side of the pan. Repeat.
Cook until brown and flip. Brown on the other side.

Jesus Christ in the last month since you came back you have gotten into fights with how many posters?

The guy starts a simple thread and here we go again... By the way you are wrong so very very wrong As you do not know the subject at all.

Even skkin did not put up real hash browns. Nothing but potatoes and spices, plus being rinsed and drained several times before cooking.

    Hash browns

If you want to compare think Swiss plain Swiss rosti.

I have no knowledge of the subject of the OP but ...

could their be a link to the 'Bubble and Squeak' we were fond of?

    Credit

I'm a fan in their various guises ... as long as they are hot/warm.

    Hash browns contain crack cocaine.

That's the reason they're so moreish.

I didn't try to pass off pommes lyonnaise as hash browns, and posted something not that dissimilar to yours, only you can not see it properly. I agree that your picture is correct, and if I think of hash browns, proper ones, it is how you posted. The thread did ask how it is PREFERRED though, and I am partial to some sort of mush hash surround by crispy bits. Maybe that's just me though.

Besides - I wasn't starting a fight, just poking fun, as confirmed by the RED from ModKitt.

Anyway, I'll post up a bread roll if you like?

only about 15 times and still not get the hint.

Anyway, the only dilemna with these real AO hash browns is if they are cooked using waxy potatoes, rather than floury ones. They have the propensity to turn into a slippy chewy cow pat.

    A very important point!

The diced spuds in your pic are just an onion too much, and some toasted black mustards seeds, tumeric and curry leaves short of being Bombay aloo.

The only hash brown I know comes from McD's or home-made such as MissKit's, above.

    Mate ... that's the drum.

You and I and others consider anything involving a bread roll NOT to be classed as a sandwich.

    Others consider it perfectly acceptable.

Cultural differences? Horses for Courses? Each to their own?

Not worth worrying about (we know we are right)

This thread is making me hungry. Think I'll be cooking up a batch of corn beef hash tomorrow. Problem is finding a nice corned beef in the middle of nowhere.

Might be better to plan it for a fortnights time? Better than the tinned muck we barmy brits think corned beef is.

The tinned stuff was a gift from the US during WW2 I believe. Spam as well. Yes, to make your own need a couple weeks. When I lived in Bangkok Villa had Silverside from Aus already corned. Great stuff.

That may well be their fancy name. When me Mum or Granny put them on my plate(usually at breakfast) as a kid they called them hash browns.

When my wife and I were first married I asked for hash browns and when she finished they looked much like this:

In my head I was saying "those aren't hash browns" because that's not the way I was used to. I did have enough sense to not say that out loud though. So even though my wife and I grew up in the same county(not country), we understood hash browns completely differently.

    Funny how that works...

edit: btw, I now like my wife's way better.

I'm not allowed to say that anymore.

I think I did have tinned corned beef and hash browns once - can't remember where, some piss poor barmy british effort in a theme restaurant I seem to recall.

Shit - were you married to MissKitt? Did she red you too?

America is a Continent, not a country I guess. Still, we now know it's your parents fault. Were they French?

No, they're not. Boxty is nothing like hash browns. Boxty is made with flour and milk.
