Meet the world’s hottest chilli – the Carolina Reaper – which is now stocked at New Mills, U.K greengrocers the Veg Box, one of only a few places in the north west to sell it.

Owner Matthew Taylor, 42, had to wait eight months for his supplier to get the authorisation to import it, such is its power. And he will only sell it to people aged 18 or over as it can cause a fatal anaphylactic shock if eaten raw.

Matthew, who also lives in New Mills, said: “It is not to be messed with and not to be handled by customers.



“If you do, even if you wash your hands, if you go to the toilet you will be in a lot of pain. It is a wonderful cooking chilli with heat and flavour. I sell it responsibly and ask people what they want it for because if eaten in excess or raw it is very dangerous.

“I’m one of the very few people to stock the Carolina Reaper. People who buy it are advised how to handle it and warned to use extreme caution. It really is just for cooking purposes.”

Just 10 days after stocking the Carolina Reaper, which costs 50p a chilli, Matthew has sold around 1,000.

It is named after the American state it was created in, by fusing together other strong types of chilli, but Matthew sources his from Belgium.

The Scoville Scale measures the strength of chilli and the naga ghost, previously thought to be the strongest, measures 1m. The Carolina Reaper rates at 1.5 to 2.2m.

It even looks like an extra hard little bastard. I wouldn't mess with it...

I've had a bottle of this in my cupboard for a year and I have to confess I'm frightened to open it.
