Oatcakes - the taste of home.

After a recent trip back to Blighty i got the taste for oatcakes again, and so decided to have a go at cooking my own.

Using a recipe passed down over hundreds of years (well, ripped off the internet), i got a flat gridle from Macro (advertised as a crepe maker) and boshed a half dozen up for breakfast.

Mix milk/water, yeast and sugar and set aside in a warm place for a few minutes to froth.

Add oatmeal, flour, and salt to a bowl and mix.

Add milk mixture and oil and whisk.

Leave to rise in warm place for an hour.

Lightly whisk - adding more warm water/milk.

Cook as for pancakes - ladle mix into pan wiped with cooking oil and fry on high heat until top "dries", flip and cook otherside.

Once cooked, cool on a cake rack.

These oatcakes are much nicer when they have cooled, ideally in the fridge for a few hours.

To serve simply warm up, add filling and roll.

My filling in these was cheese and bacon, with a side dish of brown sauce (HP).

Forgot the photo of the chef with TD on in the background.

A traditional Thai pose is used to show the oatcake.

I'm surprised that in the last pic you haven't got your dick out and stuffing it into the pancake as well.

^^ Those are oatcakes, not goatcakes!

Never heard of an oatcake but looks good. I'm out of oats but will give it a go once I purchase a can.

Misskit - apparently they are known as Staffordshire oatcakes.

Us lot from Staffordshire just call them oatcakes.

    Your crepes are too fat.

You might want to consider crepe slithers with lemon, jam and sugar.

Apart from that, they look quite nice.

Crepes make you smell of garlic and ride around on a pushbike.

There are no eggs or butter in oatcakes.

That's another mistake you've highlighted there. We're starting to get somewhere, so:

    add eggs
    add butter
    thinner mix
    wafer thin 'oat cake'
serve with jam, lemon and sugar
&, less of the oats in the mix.

Nearly there. Keep up the good work. Here's a pic of what it should look like when you've perfected the technique:

I'm liking this thread, I fukin love 'Oatcakes'. As a kid, 'Oatcake Day' was always one of my favourites (although my family never added any actually oats into the crepe mix powder).

I might start a gallery, right here on this 'oatcake' thread of my favourite 'oatcake' pix, in support of the OP's efforts. Excellent work OP, keep it up...

    I'm flouncing off this thread.

But before i do, perhaps a short history of "The Crepe".

A short history of the crepe.

The crepe was invented by the French in June 1815.
At Waterloo, the English guns fell silent when they ran out of ammunition.
Soldiers from the Staffordshire Regiment offered up their breakfast oatcakes to the sulking gunners, who rolled them into balls and fired them in the general direction of the French army.

    The carnage was great.
The French soldiers started to choke on such manly food, and promptly ran off.

Once back home, the Frog soldiers tried to recreate Staffordshires finest by using a baby batter mixture loaded with garlic and butter, as is their want, and produced what is now known as the crepe - French fag food.

"Leg it lads, the Staffords are coming".
