Eating dog.

I was talking to a lady this week who said that she had travelled extensively in Isaan and that it was common to cook up the family pet and eat it. I looked at this woman in disbelief as I had never heard of such a thing in Thailand. I knew that dog was on the menu in Vietnam but was aghast at the fact that Thai's might eat Fido. Anyway I just did a little google and fok me if she wernt right.

The Family Meal.
In Akha society, dogs are often loyal pets until about age one, when they are sacrificed and eaten. After the slaughter, it is believed that the dog’s spirit will watch over and guard the home.

So this led me to thinking what dog might actually taste like. I have eaten goat, crocodile and kangaroo but never dog.

Have any of you guys eaten dog or any other animal?

Yeah I have eaten dog in bali but didnt know it until after the fact 3 times. Same for monkey in the south, which still revolts me. Alligator in Louisana of course.

When I ate croc it was like a cross between chicken and beef. Goat was much like lamb but smelly. Kangaroo was a bit like veal to my palate. What does monkey taste like AO?

Snake is a bit ropey for me. Croc is too tough. EMU'S ok-ish. Dog helps you to keep warm in the winter, esp. if it has a black coat. Or, so I'm told...

Its gross mate, I knew something was wrong, chewy yet mushy, very very gamey. I said quickly " Pae what the hell is this" Sheepishly he replied "ling". The south 25 years ago staying with a family helping them start a business. Father shot it in the trees it turned out. Was after his doves.

There are more than Ahka eatubg dog in Thailand there was piece in the paper about the shady dog dealers a couple years back. Dogs weren;t regulated as food animals. I remember reading about the governement implementing some regulations on raising food dogs. Not sure what happened about that; but there is a good-sized dog-eating community here in Prathet Thai.
I had 'gator tail once, tasted like muddy catfish. Bear was nasty. blacktailed deer's nice. I hear dog is like pork only better. Not sure, might have eaten some in Mae Ai one time if it was, it was delicious! looked like pork but more tender and had a richer flavor.

Oh I just remembered that I also ate Ostrich which I thought was well tasty. Like kangaroo it is free of any cholesterol too.

Tender! No FF, it was tough as shit but spiced so nice, a jerky type of thing. Sort of like neua det deo here, but the spicing was nice.
I was in the foking jail at the time, and Al Capone of Bali and his mates were having it brought in.

Horse is served frozen and raw in japan. Cut in thin slices and dipped in a light sauce it tastes pretty damn good! .... I've also eaten whale meat which is too oily for my likings..

I didn't know I had eaten horse untill after the crime was commited, and the whale I had to eat, just to be polite... well that's my excuse, anyway..

I did not talk to my father for a month after that damn dog died. Can still see the foam coming out of its mouth. I think Kurt Russel, was the kid in the movie. Disney should have had a warning that the dog dies!!

I have eaten dog - in the Phillipines.

I think it's quite widely consumed there - especially in the islands.

I had a dog stew and remember it tasted a little like goat - it gave me the shits though.

The way they kill the dogs there is fairly barbaric and I witnessed it once - they put the dog in a sack and tie the top up - then 2 or 3 men beat the dog with heavy sticks so that it produces a lot of adrenaline before it dies - this is supposed to make the meat taste better. Can't say seeing this was pleasant but they seemed to have no qualms at all -
(by the way this was not the dog I ate and I only saw this some time afterwards)

I also ate 'ballot' out there - this is another Phillipine speciality - a fertilised chicken embryo in it's shell - unsurprisingly it tasted like a cross between a chicken and an egg - again (as with the dog) this was greeted by roars of laughter by the Phillipino men watching me eat - I guess like a 'farang' here eating some weird Thai dish.
