    The Vegemite vs Marmite Debate.

    Is this just a Pom vs Aussie thing or is there a difference between the two spreads in your opinion?

    Foriegners from all countries are encouraged to join in this debate.

    Naturally I do not want to sway others opinions however, as I believe that most people are quite staunch in their preference I will add that I am a firm Vegemite man. Well, I am Australian after all. Besides Marmite sounds like something that you might name a pet.

    Yep! Its Vegemite for me.

    Vegemite (or Kiwi Marmite) doesn't have enough kick for me. I prefer the genuine article.

    The Happy Little Vegemite Song

    We are happy little Vegemites as bright as bright can be,
    We all enjoy our Vegemite for breakfast, lunch and tea,
    Our mummy says we're growing stronger every single week,
    Because we love our Vegemite,
    We all adore our Vegemite,
    It puts a rose in every cheek!

    Did You Know?

    * 22.7 million jars of Vegemite are manufactured in Australia every year - that's 235 jars per minute.

    * 30 jars are sold in Australia for every one exported.

    * Vegemite is in nine out of ten pantries in Australia.

    :grin:

    Marmite
    4. Who makes it?

    Marmite is now owned by Unilever. It is made by different companies in different parts of the world, and often to a different recipe.
    It is produced in the UK by Unilever Bestfoods UK, and this is the original that you should try and seek out.
    In New Zealand it is made by the Sanitarium Health Food Company (a Seventh-Day Adventist outfit). It is sold in plastic jars with a white lid, and has a different set of ingredients:

    * Yeast
    * Sugar
    * Salt
    * Wheatgerm Extract
    * Mineral Salt (508)
    * Color (Caramel)
    * Herbs
    * Spices
    * Vitamins: Niacin, Thiamin, Riboflavin

    Apart from the addition of Sugar and Caramel, the differences in ingredients are probably just down to the different labelling requirements of the two countries, and are basically the same. The addition of sugar is what gives NZ Marmite its "weaker" (some would say "less rancid") flavor.
    Well, I never would have thunked it.

    I wouldn't say it's a fair question, as the Aussies have never had real Marmite unless they've been to the UK, and most Poms wouldn't have tried Vegemite cos it's piss poor...

    I reckon you're onto something kk, the sweeter muffin, as opposed to bread/toast, [in Oz anyway] does seem to blend better with Marmite than Vegemite.
    Although I'm sure that 2 rounds of T and V every morning helps increase the vitamin B levels immeasureably...hence less hangover.

    As a Us citizen I naturally have no idea about matters outside the states. however, if I may make an educaketed guess, one is used for patching holes in the road and the other is used for painting. Which one is which, i really have no idear!
