Thread: Cleaning a bedroom

I have recently found an excellent way for my 10-year old daughter to clean her room.

I simply grab a plastic bag and ask her "Do you want me to clean your room or will you?"

If she does not clean her room, then carry out the threat.

Today, involved a bunch of crying and screaming...

Let's hope my plan worked...

I hate to be picky, but how do you know it's an excellent way, just yet?

But I think getting a child to clean their own room requires several things to happen...

Firstly, the parents must set a good example, I;ve seen parents rooms that are messier than their child's.

Secondly, everything has it's place, have plenty of shelves, cupboards etc, I use stakable plastic crates for my sons toys.

Thirdly, no junk, no clutter, dont let the child accumalate more stuff than they know what to do with.

Finally, set some clear rules about cleaning, why? when? (Make it a regular evvent, every Friday evening the room needs to be tidied.) This is a good time to insisit upon no TV, movies, friends over (etc) until the room is tidy.

Our lad puts stuff away when he's told.

Of course, if he's not told, the place looks like a bomb has gone off.

nice one hillbilly. I am gonna try the same thing. You are going through it with a ten year old. I am with 2, 11 year olds.

When I was very young we used to have a huge country house with wooden floors. My mum would tie dusters around mine and my sisters feet and get us to "Ice Skate" round the house when she was cleaning. It kept us out the way and made the floors look great. We used to have a great time.

I agree that the parents should be the model of their children

Our six year old has cracked it, she moves it from the bedroom to the lounge.
