Ko Sichang - filthy beach and a baby shark.

An okay place to visit for 2 days and 1 night just south of BKK.

Ko Sichang's home page--guide to a wonderful island

Any longer than that would be a bit tedious. Easy to get to. Van from Victory Monument to Sri Racha - 80b I think. 50b tuktuk to the pier. 40b for the 40 minute ferry. You even get to see some of the Royal Thai Navy's fleet on the way out. You can tell they're not in service as they don't have boatloads of subsistence farmers being towed to their deaths behind them.

This little one enjoyed the ferry though.

Can rent a suitable bungalow for 800b-ish and a scooter for 300b.

Tiz a nice little place to drive around for a day or two. Might even see a dolphin.

There's a tiny beach by the old palace grounds, never mind the waft of garlic and baguettes.

Besides that the only beach that was open to the public was doubling as a rubbish tip.

Absolutely disgusting. Only ventured out when needing a pee.

Saw one bloke who looked dead floating along. Who quite bizarrely was standing on the beach 2 minutes later with a live baby shark.

The poor little bugger certainly had a set of gnashers on him.

And like that it was whisked away up the steps behind the beach, presumably to the Chinese community so they could eat its brains and penis while still alive.

Wouldn't go down again simply because of the rubbish tip beach, which is a pity, as if it was clean it would be a lovely little easy 2 day break from BKK.

But no, thai just can't manage to keep the one public beach on the closest island to BKK free of oil cans and enough plastic bags and bottles of fill a recycling plant.

Should enter this photo into the next Thai tourism authority photo competition, could do well

Seems to be no different from any beach in Mexico, or California beaches after a big summer weekend.

What most people don't seem to understand that it's not the visitors and tourists that keep beaches clean, but rather local organizers that clean up the beaches, every single morning or evening. Yes, a local population that understands the meaning of 'trash can' helps somewhat, but you need someone to organize and pay for a daily clean up.

If there's no big tourist trade, there's not enough traffic to bring in the income to pay for the clean up -- that's unfortunate, and that's sad. As you said, clean it would be a nice little beach, and if Thai local business people would understand that they could develop it into a buzzing tourist destination .... they still wouldn't do it. :-(

Could do a poster campaign mate.

Visit the beautiful island of Ko Sichang. Only an hour from Bangkok... Wander through the old French palace, from when they occupied and controlled the land.

    Saunter along the fine beaches.

    Paddle in the pristine waters.

Ko Sichang: a holiday you'll just want to repeat and repeat.

Koh Sichang was, not sure if still is, a heaven for the Merchant Marines.

Many vessels placed anchor waiting for their load of rice or whatever for a few days just off Sichang, and while waiting planned loads, loads of whores were coming to visit the sailor on board the boats...

Got a few sailor friends never drying out of stories they had lived there, girls leaving the board with small fridges and other items against other services they provided on board, probably the best place to anchor around the globe for those chaps up to 2 decades ago,

Not many things changed probably on the Thai side, but for the Vessels, stops are much shorter and things changed, the crews is different too now...

The rubbish situation is something that I can't see being addressed without the help of adult supervision..adults meaning people who give a toss about the environment..which clearly these people don't. Without trying to slag the place(all of Thailand) off too much, it is a total total shithole..I tried sorting the problem down my road by picking up discarded rubbish infront of the people (neighbours) who'd just tossed it whilst giving them a hard stare,,but it bounces off,,fuck them, filthy kunts..

Nice thread, mate..eye opener for prospective visitors to the island.

btw, anybody know anything about the shark?

    species? (black tipped fins?)

    how common they are?

    how big the adults grow?

and how the hell did the guy catch it, I'm 95% sure it was him lying motionless face down 1 minute before. Then suddenly he was standing at the edge of the sea with a shark?

Looks like a small Black Tip.

Quite common but not usually that close inshore .

Are you sure it was alive !!!

By the state of the sea I reckon it was abandoned by its mum and was suicidal !

    ^^

Pain in the bum when you are night fishing from a boat for grouper though - little bastards can strip a hook in seconds- and if you get a grouper sometimes bite a lump out of it as you are bringing it in !!

How can some want to swimm in that ?

In Samut Sakhon they are swimming and fishing in such rivers, and eating the fish that survives the deal. The fish is probably happy to leave the waters...
I heard that they are wondering why all fish they get are blind looking like, the eyes are greyish, foggish...

These pics were taken 28/12/09 and the water was crystal clear.

The condition of this beach can vary according to currents and weather conditions. It's always best avoided on Thai public holidays.

Hard to tell from CM's pics. The one shown above looks like Tham Phang beach on Ko Sichang.

There's really only one beach on the island.

The tessaban workers clean it before public holidays. When the crowds leave, it's usually a big mess again.
