| What works for one person may not work for another. I personally don't care for the hustle and bustle of Patters nor do I particularly need the in your face night life environment in Patters. I do however see how it would be apealing to some so I am not judging those who frequent the scene. Me, I want swimable beaches nearby, less traffic and congestion, privacy and more county type environment, access to Patters and all the Western amenities that it offers when I choose to go there, and a more simple life style. Rayong Prov offers that for me.... But it isn't for everyone. I know that and respect that. What works for one may not work for another.

| The Dog | Memock, Pattaya and Jomtien aint bumfuk Ubon Rachet, the cheapest shophouses available near me at the moment are 18,000baht per month if you take a years contract, they are single story units, ie 1 floor, the ground floor, no upstairs, no stairs, 200 meters from me the 4 story shop houses have in the past year got a rent reduction to 32,000baht per month per unit, this has been reduced from 38,000baht per month, you generally can't rent buildings that have a value of 4 to 7 million baht each for 6,000baht per month anywhere in the world.

| re sae traveller you are correct . The places are more diversed then what I said. But although, the shady parts of Pattaya makes me feel at home. I like the crazy buzz and I seldom feel alone, even when staying alone. And while away I always miss the city but off course, there are thornes on even urban roses,,,,he he |

| Agrees with buddy SEA T. about the area and also about the Mapthaput immigration. Never had any problems with them. A 90 days takes about 5 min. and my last yearly extension, including a 90 days and the register of my new passport was a 'longish' 35 min. job. |

Banchang is 30 minutes from the smog of Mataphut. Banchang isn't that polluted.....yet. If you turn right off the main drag, as you come from Rayong , and go up the hill a bit it's quite nice. Air/pollution wise. Turn left and go down to the beaches and they're OK. Rayong is as booring as the grave, and suffers far more from the Mataphut pollution. IMHO of course.....

| thanks for all the info. I like the sound of the immigration office at mataphut. I think I might have a place sorted in Pattaya, a/c, internet and whatever else under 6000 theb per month, and depending on how long term can be cheaper than what I have been given. don't know until I see it, maybe it's the pits! |

| Probably it makes sense to base in or near to Pattaya for your first move to Thailand- you've got all the conveniences of home basically, and then some. See how it goes- you might settle in well there, or want to move somewhere a bit quieter and less surreal after a while. Around Pattaya there is a sprawling suburban belt too, a lot of expats live here and it's quite different to central Pattaya.

| Aussie John. You are getting answers from people who do not know Sattahip. Amphur Sattahip covers the area south from Jomtien, including, Ban Amphur, Na Jomtien, Bang Sare, Doa Tan, Sattahip Town, and Plutaluang. I live in Plutaluang. There is a large golf course very near. Yes, there is very little in Sattahip 'town' apart from a large Tesco Lotus store, with accompanying cinema. I have farang friends in Bang Saray, and there are quite a few western food restaurants in Bang Sare, so I pop over there, if I want western food. Yes, most of my neighbours are Thai, and most are employed by the Thai Navy. Mine are as good a neighbour as you could meet. Very friendly, and proud to have a farang living amongst them. There are a couple of farangs on my estate, but don't mix with them much. You need your own transport, be it bike or car. I drive into Pattaya or Jomtien, every couple of weeks, to buy western food supplies, of which there are many outlets, but, as I have retired here, and am no longer a tourist, I do not spend like one, or act like one. I want to integrate with the life and the thai people, while maintaining western contacts. Rent, and purchase price of proprties is totally unrealistic, in Pattaya and Jomtien. The sellers think we are all uneducated mugs. I have a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom sigle storey house on 67 talangwah of land. Cost, just over 2 years ago, 1.5 million baht. House about 4 years old since built. It also depends if you have an uncontrollable sex drive, and are going to pay through the nose to live and drink in Pattaya. Wouldn't recommend anywhere near Maptaput for same reasons as mentioned by earlier post. Well, that's my contribution to your thread. Try a short term rental, and see what you think. 4 to 6,000 baht to rent a house here. |
