    Koh Chang

Dont know if Koh chang has been spoken about, but its a great get away free from over crowding the beaches are nice and nobody trying to sell you stuff ever 5 mins.it a place where you'd take your books, as there is nothing eles to do apart frm reading and relexing.
Well it was like that the last time i was here, i just hope that it hasn't lost that charme.

There is a lot more to do than just reading and relaxing, plenty of waterfalls to visit as long as you don't mind the hike, just driving round the island is an experience in itself.

One of my favorite places, although I'm saddened by the over-development and changes I see every time I visit.

I haven't been this year, but a friend at work who visited recently said that trashy beaches, jet skis and banana boats have arrived where he stayed on Kai Bae.

This year I'm planning to hit some other islands in the Koh Chang chain, before they are destroyed. Inevitable, isn't it?

I'm thinking of takin the family there especially how the tourist numbers are down and if I put it off any longer it may never be the same as it is now.

Any ideas on places to stay etc? I assume you can get your car there?

We stayed here a few years back, very nice if you can get the bungalow on the beach.

Yes you can take your car across.

Lived there for a while, glad i left. Living and visiting are two different things of course. It is becoming over developed, and most of the developments are an eyesore with no consideration for the surrounding areas.

There are still some very nice secluded areas left of the island when entering by ferry.

I was there the end of October and saw one banana boat for the Thais. But not a jet ski one. We went to Tree Tops for a climbing and zip line adventure. It was truely top class. The main waterfall near Klong Prao is also great. Charges more for farangs, but a tax ID, or drivers license gets you in for next to nothing.

My family and I love it as well. Always stay in the old sea front bungalows at Siam Bay Resort.

I went there for the first time last year, someone told me to go to lonely bay, Foking joking ain't ya, muppets everywhere and shitty bungalow at top dollar.

Just to be fair I'll go back again in the middle of the low season and have a good poke around but the development was rampant, unrelenting and wont be long till its totally foked like Samui.

The Thais just don't know when to stop, thats there big problem, flog a foking place to death and fok the consequences as the dumb farang just keep on coming.

I went a bit further south to Koh Maak, foking lovley it was; no development at all just three restaurants serving quality BBQ. Up at Sunset everyday and just as stunning under the moon light. 5/5

That place was superb many years ago. Before I found that place I'd been to Samui only to be told I'd already missed the real Samui, got to Koh Pan Ngan only to find out I'd missed the real Koh Pan Ngan, too. When I found Koh Chang I think I got it at the right time for my wants and needs. Lonely Beach could only be accessed by boat or through the jungle. Some of my best life experiences happened on that beach over the couple of years I visited there. Went back about 5 years ago and there were syringes and crap littered on the beach. Picked the kid up, walked back to the car and drove away.

They paved paradise, put up a parking lot.

A couple of years ago I went to Koh Chang with a few people,..two were Thai’s and were disappointed after seeing so much development on the island after their last visit five years before that. However I enjoyed the island. It seemed nice enough to me.

    We stayed here: http://www.allresortthailand.com/thai/kohchang/kaibaebeach/index.html

It was comfortable corner room with a private balcony and a water view. I think the corner rooms are a little larger than the normal rooms (and have their own balconies). Down stairs at the reception area they have a small restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.

We rented a motorcycle for a day (maybe 200 baht?) and toured the island. We tried to circle the island on the motorcycle but the paved road ended at a certain point and we had to turn around. The couple that was with us went on an elephant ride into the jungle, while we were touring.
During another day we took a kayak to a nearby island, just to say we did it (larger island in one of the pictures below). There was nothing on the island,…………but it was good exercise and interesting trying to get to Thai women to row simultaneously. The water was crystal clear, every where we went.
One evening we went on an Eco Dinner. It is on the side of the island where the Ferries dock (other side of the island from the tourist areas). At this certain fishing village they will take you up a waterway towards the sea on a kind of Thai gondola and later another gondola would meet up with your boat with dinner. They would stop the boat and serve you dinner in the waterway (I think they give you a choice to two different types of dinners to choose from). It was nice too see a relatively unspoiled part of the island.

Do you think I am mad if I just drive down there, stay in Trat the night and get there early and find a place to stay this weekend? Or should I save myself a world of pain and book first? I got an idea about where I want to stay but all the booking (online) is done via agencies-useless.

I'd pick a few that you see online and just show up. Not all of them will be full. It's fairly quiet here right now, but the resorts haven't had the losses anywhere near those of Phuket or Samui. What type of budget did you have in mind? Any beach in particular? There's quite a few things for families with kids to do here. Treetop adventure park, elephant trekking, snorkeling trips, paintball, etc.

    Budget of 500 B a night.

No seriously i'd like a bungalow near near the beach. Lonely beach sounds good, the quieter the better for us though and definately need a nice beach close by.

    2-3000 a night is ok.

Pool, snorkelling and some trips inland to waterfalls etc. me, Mrs and my 7 year old. Can crash in one bed ok.

Thinking to get the first ferry over Fri morning and check it out. We will be driving . just don't want the stop at every resort thing, look and drive to the next one for hours on end.

This would be your best option on Lonely Beach in your price range:
Koh Chang island's Siam Beach Resort: all Beach Front accommodations on the famous lonely beach on Ko Chang in Eastern Thailand.

It's right on the beach and has a pool.

The only other place with a pool on Lonely Beach is this one:

Bhumiyama bech resort (not my spelling error)

Bhumiyama is a bit more expensive though.

White sand beach has many, many more options.

Yeah, I did look at Siam Beach Resort sounds perfect. Also looked at Siam Bay resort as Aging One has been there a couple of times but don't know about the beach situation.

white sand beach is before lonely bay and more developed right?

either way, if I get the first ferry over on Friday I hope to beat the weekend rush and have time to check it out.

    thanks for the info Pickel!

I'd avoid this place. Overpriced and right next to a joint that plays euro-trash dance music 24/7 - Loudly.

I wasn't impressed with Lonely Beach at all. More like wanker beach.

Maybe 'Lonely Wanker Beach' would work? Or 'Dalton Beach' for short?

Bhumiyama is overpriced and close to the Treehouse. Siam Beach Resort is at the other end of the beach far from the bars and much quieter. The village area of Lonely Beach is populated by mostly young backpackers who like to party. That is about one km from Siam Beach. The beach itself is a nice beach but occasionally can be dirty after storms and high seas, but is usually clean, with the cleanest part near Siam Beach. You also don't get somebody hasseling you trying to sell you something every 30 seconds.

i was there this year for 3 days and it is a relaxing place, however, get to the ferry as close to the hour as you can, if my memory serves me correctly, the ferry leaves on the hour every hour , not much fun if you get there a little after the hour and you have to hang around
    enjoy your trip
