Living in Bang Saen or Mae Phin

I recently returned to Oz after three weeks in Jomtien. I had a look at Bang Saen whilst I was there and was really impressed with how clean the place was after Pattaya and Jomtien. Does anyone have any experiences of living in either of those places or even further south of Pattaya? I'm applying for a retirees visa and want somewhere fairly laid back but with a few bars and restaurants. I'm not prepared to go totally native. I will buy somewhere after renting for a few months to test the waters. I also wondered about Mae Phin or places south of Pattaya.

Hi Dennis, it might also be a good idea to look at a map of Thailand first, or at least read Forum descriptions.
Then you might get more answers if you were to put this in the Eastern Thailand Forum. Good luck anyway.

I thought this was the Eastern Thailand section. That's what I clicked on anyway.

I lived in Bangsen for about 3 years before moving back to Australia. Very nice spot. Basically it's a university (Burapha) town so has lots of young student types. Most of the students seem to be female so the viewing is normally quite good as they have turned the wearing of uniforms into an art form (as can be seen in the 'university uniforms' thread).

There is a Tops supermarket in Laemthong Department Store along with a cinema showing the latest movies (usually with English soundtrack) and you have Tesco Lotus, Big C, Carefourre (sp), and Makro not too far away.

The beach is great, particularly on balmy evenings. They have light pylons on the beach which they turn on most nights and heaps of people come to eat and drink with friends. It's not a great swimming beach but not too bad if you have young kids.

Lots of good restaurants, particularly seafood restaurants, and because of the university students lots of nightlife in the way of pubs and discos. Lots of funky little open-air restaurants/coffee shops/meeting places, my favourite of which was called "Wooden Chair Restaurant" which did some pretty decent farang food.

We lived in a housing estate called Wangmukland which is on the main road down to the beach, just before Laemthong Department Store and opposite the university. Very convenient with its own 7-11, Thai-style restaurants, drugstore and night market Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Another good thing about Bangsaen is you are conveniently located between Bangkok and Pattaya with either place being about an hour away by car. Unfortunately this also makes it very convenient for Bangkok Thais to visit. Most weekends and particularly long weekends are a nightmare traffic-wise down towards the beach.

If we ever return to Thailand to live, I will certainly be looking at setting up in Bangsaen again.

Thanks for that info, I must admit I was impressed with the place even though I was only there for a few hours. I'm going back to Thailand shortly so will try to rent a place for a month to get a better feel for the place. Where do I find the thread for"university uniforms"?

Get yourself another 97 posts and you'll be able to see them.

We go there a couple of times a year and I gorge myself on seafood down on the beach, however, as mentioned above, the traffic is truly horrendous at weekends and long weekends/public holidays.
