Question Koh Chang or Koh Samet??

You experts have been so helpful that I'm needing to ask for further advice. I am a frequent visitor to Thailand (7 times, I think) but have been to neither island.

Which is the better choice for about 3 or 4 nights...and where? Thanks, again, in advance. The information I've gotten here has been remarkable!!

Well, I had the same quandary awhile ago, so I did research on both places, and asked around. The general opinion is that Koh Samet is kind of a weekend getaway for Thais living in Bangkok. It's nice, but expensive. A friend of mine told me that the internet shops charge 10 baht a minute for internet use. I also understand that they charge you to get into the place, since it's a national park. I've heard rumors of 500 baht a person, but maybe someone else can confirm whether or not this is true.

Koh Chang is a bit further away but we spent three days there and it was wonderful. Went to White Sands Beach (shitty) and then traveled over to Lonely Beach (nice). The thread I started can be found here:

both are nice, koh samed is much closer to bangkok (and therefore easier to get to) it still has plenty of cheaper options on the island, particularly on the west side.

Koh chang itself is pretty big and boring you need to get to the smaller islands, (via ferry) but some of them are so small that they have only one mini resort that may or may not have enough food during the quiet season.

    i recommend either.

I like Samet better I still think it is cheaper but you have to deal if you don't speak thai then let your g/f or wife make the deals they try to cheat you when you get off the ferry but if again you speak thai or let your g/f make the deal you will be ok . Also this is a bring your own girl place. If you deal you can get a nice room for about 1200 the food is great and a ton restraunts to chose from they do charge you to get on the Island It is a National park.
Don't under estimate the power of stupid people in large groups!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

^ I've never been charged, catch the speed boat instead of a ferry and u go straight to other side avoiding the rangers.

BTW 1200 would get a very decent room, there are rooms for la lot less. some of the rooms/resorts hire tents out too.

Yeah I have hade room for 600 but the bathrom ceiling was so short if I didn't watch it I would scrape my head on it and I had to duck to take a shower and I think the shitter was a squatter

^ all three piers have a booth for speedboats and they are a set price. I think its 1200 one way. saves waiting for a ferry, gets you there in 20 minutes, drops you directly at the beach of your hotel/resort.

    I prefer Samet.
    nicer beaches, more convenient.
    "where" depends on your requirements.

"silver sands" if you are younger than me and like noise, drinks and pizzas.

I prefer Koh Samet but begrudge the 400baht entrance fee, but it probably still works out cheaper as the accomodation is cheaper etc, plus it has better beaches

    you don't pay it.

if you walk from whatever the pier is called, you can take a left about 100 metres from the NP entrance.

takes you through a monastary of some sorts that borders onto the beach.
    then you are through.

100 per person ferry, 400 baht per person entry, 100? or 200? baht per person for a song toew.....

    not far different really.

    plus, time waiting = nil

plus time on water = 20 mins vs 1 hour

plus time getting to your accommodation .

    = major convenience!

Well the first time I went there we got off the ferry and walked up the hill and got on the back of one of those truck that I think cost 200 baht but we were the first ones on this truck and it was not full and we where going to have to wait 30 min for the next ferry. So I started talking to a shister taxi. He kept telling me whole thing 500 baht my wife kept telling not to listen to him and just wait sure enough I paid the 500 and he gave the short ride to the gate where I had to pay to get in to the park and that is where he left me

I always used to walk from the ferry to White Sands Beach on Koh Samet, it's only like 1km, even the old gits could manage that
