    Koh Chang Slums

Not really slums in a third would sense, but took a short cut through a fair ing condense area in what I think was lonely beach in Kho Chang last month. I was supprised at the number of tattoo shops (huts, lean-too's), the general conditions the falang backpackers were living in. I know there on a budget, and I'm not knocking them, but the beach would have made better quarters or even a swag. They seemed to packed in like sardines, in a not really pleasant part of the island I thought.

    Why is it so?

Exactly. As a business owner in the area you speak of I can concur that the backpackers that holiday here are cheap bastards.

As a "business owner" you are able to set prices for accommodation/food/drinks etc. I would expect the " backpackers" would note the prices and choose other "businesses" if cost was a problem.

Slums in a third world sense.

As opposed to first world slums.

    Indeed.

The worm turned at least a year ago - skint white people are the norm nowadays.

Westerners should be forced to spend 10k per week at least or be deported.

In fact, I believe it may actually be immigration law in 4-5 years time.

I believe that this long-held romance with cheap grungy backpacker types only exist throughout Lonely Planet guidebooks, as it first appeared 30 years ago.

My Thai GF & I went to Koh Chang in Sept 2011. I'd heard about Koh Chang, on the Airplane YVR/HKG/BKK from some Canuck Oil Field Guys. We checked it out enroute to Cambodia. Bussed from Pattaya to Trat, OVN in a motel then Bussed to the ferry and got off @ Koh Chang Terminal. There was very little there. Not a taxi or a bus. We finally got a ride from an Aussie run Hotel. I was less than impressed with Koh Chang. The weather was rainy in Sept. Too cool for swimming. We rented Scooters and rode around for a few days. Don't think I'd bother going back. I don't know what those Oil guys liked about the place. Think they were divers. I've been in many better Islands in Thailand , Cambodia & Vietnam.

Gosh, if that were the budget threshold I'd be quids in.

In fact the criteria for settlement is already 65,000 per month or 800,000 per annum so we're way past that paltry sum already.

    Are you a tefler?

Can they possibly speed this process up.The Dragon Lady currently uses that figure as a limit per shop entered.

    Great isn't it.

What financial threshold would you put forward for non-deportation on a involuntary basis?

Well I speak English to the missus everyday, does that count?

I quite like the beach at the far end of the island, Bang Bao. Quiet, nice sand and sea, and nice view of other islands out on the distance.

That beach has been over run with new businesses and loads of Russians. The water isn't that great as it is near the pier where boats and bungalows dump their sewage.

Probably been a year since I've been there. They were just finished a row of not too bad wooden bungalows on the far side of it. Water's always seemed fine when we've been there.

Difficult to find one's paradise these days, isn't it?

Don't blink your eyes - commercialisation will soon eat it up.
