    Ah, Real Estate Agents

As a first post an enquiry -

We will be hopefully/probably/definitely be moving somewhere near Chantaburi in a few months due to our business requiring us to do so and after two visits I have yet to find a real estate agent or even more thna just Robinson's as a department store . . . we have two girls, 9 and 1, and schools seem a bit thin on the ground as well . . . can't speak Thai yet but are learning.

We'll be flying in again tomorrow to finalise several issues pertaining to work and would love to get some inside knowledge.

    Cheers

Your best advice is to ignore Butterfly, everyone else does.

I really don't think you will find a real estate agent in Chantaburi, they are not something that Thais use as they don't like buying second hand houses because they are scared of ghosts.

Just ask around if there any any houses for sale.
As soon as they smell your money you will be offered some houses.

I assume your wife is thai.

Go to the different banks in the area... ( may be bank websites as well...)

They all have booklets with propertys they want to get rid off...

Moved to the area from Bangkok several months ago.

Nix the agent idea, what you get is a whole lot of people flogging a house in the hopes of getting a commission on the deal. That's just the way it is.

Best bet is to move into the area and try and negotiate a long stay deal at one of the Hotels, shouldn't be too hard as its now approachiing low season. Plan on spending a fair amount of time just looking around and getting to know a few people, they will know of rentals/sales available. BTW you didn't mention whether your looking for rentals or to buy.

We stayed at the Travelodge, not bad but the restaurant/coffee shop leaves a lot to be desired if your after anything other than a nice breakfast buffet.

Hotel is clean and not noisy, has a pool, shop and some other stuff we didn't participate in.

There are a couple of us falangs in the area that MIGHT be able to help a little. Where exactly will you be working? What is your max commute distance? Do you have a mode of transport? All key issues in this area.

    Some other info:
    Decent hospital (s)
Robinsons Department store in the center of town
Tops in the basement of Robinsons
    Tesco/Lotus
    Macro

Chantaburi is a fairly large town with most of what you need available.

I hear schools are decent, there are some 'private' ones available. Our girl goes to a private boarding school in Rayong about an hour away, so can't be much help there. I can tell you though that one little girl moved into our neighborhood from Germany about 6 months ago, (about 10 or 11 I'd guess.) She goes to a local Thai school and is already quite fluent, kids pick it up really quick.

Basic transportation is good, Sontaew's, buses, Motorcycles etc.

for some other spurious information I've a thread called "Moving to the Moo Ban... Permanently" in the Living In Thailand and Thai Language Forum.

PS feel free to PM me for any questions.

Thanks for the answers . . . with the exception of butterfly, of course.

Ah, incorrectly assumed - neither of us are Thai, possibly another hindrance in our quest.
We are looking to rent for the initial period of about 12 months to get the lay of the land

Thanks for the offer to PM you, EG . . . I tried that, typed out a tome . . . only to lose it all when I tried to post and was told I needed to have 20 or more posts before I could PM. (Not used to using smilies, but thought I'd brighten it up a bit) I also looked at the 12+ page thread on moving, thanks.

The idea of moving to Thailand is really a matter of need rather than want, though we do very much like the country - we've been in Singapore for 6 years now and would commute to Thailand if possible, but it's a bit difficult to do so with two kids . . . on the other hand flying over every week for three days is a bit tedious as well.

Lots to ponder - thanks again for your help.
