Rayong Sattahip Pattaya Sri Racha Chonburi Minibus

Only found out about these minibuses a month or so ago, if your in Pattaya these are a great way to get to Rayong or Chonburi, it costs around 60 to 80baht per person but they are quick and there seems plenty of them, ie only ever a few minutes wait at most.

They stop just after each set of traffic lights in Pattaya to pick up and drop off passengers, sometimes there is standing room only so they have passengers standing, not sure if that is a good idea on a minibus, some have the front signs, Rayong Chonburi in English but most have them in Thai.

sometimes there is standing room only
due to the alarming frequency with which thai minibuses crash and either killed or maim their passengers, due mainly to poorly maintained vehicles, drivers racing, falling asleep, sudden onset blindness etc. i thought that there was a limit to the number of passengers they were allowed to carry.

    just a thought.

right, there is always a risk involved hence the "risk assessment" exercise. with the frequency of trips and large vol of vans, reduced risk.

not sure that there is a no risk way to get from point A to B here in Thailand.

    increased risk.

with more companies operating, it means fewer passengers per company, increasing the pressure on the companies to make a profit.

so expect less vehicle maintenance, fewer drivers-i.e. longer shifts, and more racing as companies strive to be the quickest, which is what thai passengers want above anything else.

Actually it only seems to be one company, the driving is pretty good and they don't seem to be chasing each other, ie no racing etc, obviously though if you are standing in a minibus a slight accident could end up being fatal for you, so I wouldn't recommend that, infact many Thais on seeing there were no seats didn't bother getting on and just waited for the next one, seems to be plenty of them minibuses.

^ concur with this thought. the Thais are also concerned about the cost as well... so there is probably an individual assessment of cost, speed, convenience, and maybe even safety sometimes..... possibly even in that order if weighted.

On a related subject, it does seem most of the public passenger vans on the main Chonburi highway 7 into and out of Bangkok have slowed substantially since the vans were supposedly equipped with those RFID devices.

they seem to be. they are certainly more accommodating than the large highway buses that are always breaking down and have the Thai TV on loud. The mini vans, given the driver is responsible and not on yaba seems like a good bet.
