4000 Thb iis a cheap hotel on SAMET

    Hi,

The only interest of SAMET is that it is so close to BKK an Pattaya.

But rooms are overpriced there, look at what you get for 4000 thb.

Also after visiting ALL Thai islands, I can confirm that SAMET is the dirtiest on the road side (behind the resorts), these people must be so retard to destroy what brings them so much money...

I used to like Ao lung dam on samet, away from the madness, good for family, but not after friday, the Thais invade the place.

Koh sichang is also nice though only has one beach, but good restaurants around, same again good during the weekdays

    Not now, they've fucked it.
Have'nt been in 3 years now.
Couldnt agree more - used to go every year three or four times - stayed at Saikeaw Bungalows (around 600 baht for a nice bungalow). Last Songkran (2011) went to the same place - no bungalows - replaced by bloody great hotel blocks full of drunken arabs, lousy service etc. Horrible room with broken fan and cold trickle (could not be called a hower) 1200 baht.

I'm done and will try some other recommendations from this thread.

I first visited Ko Samet in 1990... day trip only and it was mid week. We went to Hat Sai Khao and it was really peaceful and quiet. The water was incredibly clear (when snorkelling, I felt a kind of fear of heights or vertigo because the sandy bottom seemed to go on forever into the depths.

I have been back many times and watched in disappointment as over the years it gets more crowded, more polluted and the prices rise to new ridiculous levels. I rarely visit now, especially when at one stage they tried increasing the foreign entry fee to 400 baht... I got away with the Thai price (half the time they don't even charge the Thais) but my friends weren't so lucky.

Ko Chang is definitely my favourite in terms of price, scenery and activities. Second is actually Ko Si Chiang. It's a bit of an unusual island and it doesn't have fantastic beaches, but there are plenty of interesting sites to see.

Quite, AO. My brother and one of my best mates used to come over from Tokyo (late '80s), one could rent a bamboo hut with no elec or water for 50bt a night - right on the beach.

When I started making the trip,it would cost a couple of hundred baht a night - elec from 6 in the evening to 6 in the morning with mattress on the floor (ealry '90s).

We spent part of our honeymoon down there and quite liked the beaches around candlelight beach down the bottom and Tubtim resort about half way down. At this time (2000) rooms were around 500bt a night but still no electricity during the day. I believe its now 24hr electricity which is good news.

During my visits, I have never found staff to be friendly, in general. Right from my very first visit, I got the impression that they knew that boat loads of new punters would be out there every day all year round and that all they had to do was take the money!

They've obviously taken the British curriculum on hospitality and service.

Have no desire to go back there!

Unbelievable! (not saying you are lying) people pay that to rent a house for a month, where I live

The idea of tourists paying more than locals is not unique to Thailand or even Asia. There are many museums and attractions in the west that have special entrance deals for anyone who can prove a local postcode. If tourism is an industry then tourists can expect to pay a tourist price. Should locals not be able to enjoy an attraction that 'belongs' to them (since they are locals) at a cheaper price?

When you also factor in that western workers get paid more for doing the same job in Thailand as a Thai and I can't see how even long termers can have a complaint about the double pricing.

Westerners can't legally hold a job that a Thai could do!

We used to visit Samet often in years gone by, we stopped going because my wife was quoted a price more expensive than my quote, she was not a happy bunny.

Some 12 yrs ago or so we got offered a plot of land on the island my wife was not interested 2/3 years later the same land had of doubled in price, another lost opportunity in Thailand

Looks very expensive; paid 800 baht in Cha-am for a not too different room. Is the island generally expensive? I've never been, always thought I'd be full of Bkk and Pattaya folk getting away for the weekend; I'd rather go elsewhere.

The night-time beach pics look exactly like what I'd need to avoid, but you did say that other beaches looked quieter, so I suppose it comes down to personal preference.

With the expense of the car, accom, boat there, boat back, etc, you seem to have made some strange choices... Just sayin like... Maybe I'm just poor and need to take more care with expenses...

It's expensive but not that much. That room should be no more than 2000 baht.

Why did he say about 3000-4000? Surely he would know

I've stayed in better rooms for 1000 baht on Chang and in Krabi.

About the same cost as a motel room in Sydney
You can get a motel room for $100 which is about 3000 baht, cheaper than what you paid.

That's the worst room I've seen for 4000 baht if that's what you paid but you said 3000-4000 so it sounds like you don't have much of a clue.

Unless your wife was a close relative of an islander I rather think you are talking complete bollocks.
