If some scumbag poisons your Pet.......

I live in fear that this will happen to my two pals.......

However, I hear that if you are very quick you may save them by making them sick. This can be effected by pouring a raw egg down their throat or a couple of spoons of Hydrogen Peroxide I am reliably told. Don't like the sound of the latter...

Or perhaps the inestimable November Rain knows better?

It's sad that 'man's best friend' is treated so badly by Thai people.

Fek, there's 3 or 4 threads on here advising on the best poisons.

^Where's the thread on giving mouth to mouth resuscitation on animals?

Hmmmm, that might actually be useful.

In fact, I know that you exhale through the NOSE for canines!!!

Let me find some facts to support this...

You need to be very careful, LD as vomiting can increase the risk factor of some poisons. I've also heard the egg remedy, as well as mustard & milk & large quantities of soda water (??) - to make them vomit (as I said, not always the best bet).

My advice is to go to the pharmacy now/tomorrow and buy some charcoal tablets & keep them in your first aid box. Should the unthinkable happen, force two or three charcoal tablets down them (they absorb the poison) and get them straight to the vet - as they'll need specialist treatment & possibly an IV.

Got to be careful here. Most poisons used are rat poisons. Problem is there are several types. Generally, inducing vomiting is the best thing to do but if the dog is having seizures you probably shouldn't. Knowing symptoms is the key to doing the right thing. Check out this link to learn about symptoms.

Dog Poison Care

In any case always get the dog to the vet as quickly as you can and they will likely survive. Mine did even though I thought he was a gonner. BTW, nobody poisoned him. He like other dogs will eat just about anything including a rat dead from poison.

CMN, unfortunately, unless you see the dogs eat the poison & realise what it is, you're very likely too late. I know what to do & we've lost far more dogs than we've saved through poison. It's all just a matter of being in the right place at the right time, sadly. By the time you notice symptoms it's usually touch & go or too late.

We tried the raw egg remedy when our dog was poisoned. It induced vomiting but only spared the poor dog for a few days, it eventually died of pneumonia.

I know exactly the feeling helplessness you had watching your dog die. The same happened to me many years ago. Fact is there are times nothing you could have done would have saved him so don't beat yourself up. Being able to spot symptoms of a sick dog is important for any dog owner. When I decided it was time for a new best friend, I vowed I would learn all I could to prevent a recurrence of what happened with the little guy that died.

Amen. With most of the poisons readily available in Thailand off the shelf, you have about an hour to have any hope of saving the dog.

NR, We find most of the poisonings here in Isaan are not deliberate but usually the dog gets into the poison out of natural curiosity. Is this the case in your area or do you suspect more are deliberately poisoned?

A lot of times when dogs are poisoned it can be traced back to the owner that never taught his dogs any manners and the dog had become a nuisance by either barking all the time or destroying property.
But then of coarse there are people who are just assholes..

You gotta be gutless to poison a dog, if they piss you off and there is enough of the fvcking mongrels that do around here, just smack them over the head with a big stick.
Mind you its the owners or ex owners that need a smacking but sadly its illegal

Unfortunately, modus operandi for Thai b&e gangs involves poisoning all the dogs in the area just after midnight and then do the b&e a few hours later.

Keeping the dog inside the house is one option. But the only other option is as HB says. So, HB, how do you do it?

Most of ours were poisoned deliberately. One got into paint, but we saved him.

I have had most of my gun dogs trained so they will not eat anything unless I give it to them or it is in their own feed bowl.
Takes a little time, but hunting in the uplands of PNW where there is still some govt trappers that use poison for pests it is the only way that you are sure of your dog going home with you and still breathing.
I have some neighbors in my new home that I have already taught some choice words in English, they have yappy dogs that make vocal sounds that are uncalled for, for no reason. Now if they can find out what Motherfuckers means.
