I mentioned on another thread a while back that our live-in maid, Jum, was getting married. Well, her special day was on Wednesday and she left for the village on Monday morning. She now comes to the house during the daytime but leaves in the evening.

One of our dogs, a golden retriever, has always been very close with Jum and he is now acting quite strange. He won't sleep in his normal bed which is outside Jum's old room and has a fan, preferring to sleep under a sofa and more surprisingly he ignores Jum while she is here during the day.

This morning I went downstairs to let the dogs out only to find that he had scratched the skin under his left ear into a bloody mess. I'm taking him to the vets later but I'm wondering if this is some sort of reaction to Jum not living here anymore?

Dogs can be very emotional.

I had a Staffordshire Bull Terrier about 20 years ago that was obedience trained to a very high level. She was an excellent dog.

Then one day my daughter brought home a kitten. The next da when I came home from work there was a dog turd sitting in the middle of my bed.

It only happened the once, but she had told me in no uncertain terms how she felt about the new kitten.

I agree completely. Our dog is a very well behaved animal. However, when we leave her with our maid for a week or two, then our dog tends to tear things up.

The vet said he has ear mites and gave an injection plus some drops, anti-biotics and also some topical cream.

He said the dog was what sounded as 'apolemy' which I take to mean very itchy.

I've had golden retrievers and consider them to be the gentlemen/ladies of the canine family..your dog is probably suffering a little "empty nest syndrom" and should come out of it after a little while...another live-in just for the nights might solve the prob.
