Chivas Regal whisky - any good?

Now I like a drop of the old whisky but have never tried this well advertised brand.

It always seems quite expensive for a blended but I had my local off licence owner raving about it last night.

anyone have any views on this whisky - how does it compare to Johnny Walker Red or Bell's for example and is it worth the cash?

I started on a bottle of Laphroaig 10 yr old single malt last night - now that is a whisky!

Better than black label IMO, not as nice as nice malts though.

I'll have to give it a try at some point - it's £16 a bottle over here in the UK

A Scottish mate of my old mans, used to say that chivas was quite an ordinary drop.He said there was nothing wrong with it,but it didn't warrant the price etc.He believed that it was just a smart advertising campaign.Same probably applies to Black label.

This bloke used to knock off a bottle a week.normally the expensive shite like 10-18 year old Glenmorangie or Talasker. He was also biased as hell.He said that if Whisky didn't come from Skye (really peaty flavour)...then it was shite as well.

It's not a bad drop but well overated IMO, so is Black. A lot of it is just down to personal taste though. I'd stick to a Grouse, Bells or Jamersons if I was in the UK

I agree with you on the Johnnie Walker Black Label scam

Overpriced (in Thailand and England) -but who in his right mind would pay twenty quid plus for a bottle of blended anyway?

still, as whiskys go - Chivas must be sampled - who will offer me a shot of this stuff when I come to LOS for a 2 month trip in January...ay

HI Surasak- what the fuck is a 'moof'?

anyway , I'm coming to Thailand for about 2 months in Jan but during that time I plan to go to VIetmam for a bit to check out the old war stuff =

if you want to meet up for a beer/whisky at some time down Suk that would be a laugh?

BY THE way, can you give me a job?

A "Moof" is the sound from what a combination of a dog and a cow would make (it's an old joke from people who have used Macintosh computers for a long time).

Me hand you a job? I need one myself.

I will be there probably mid-Jan for about 10 days. Already have one date set aside for one forum member

Chivas is ok if you mix it with coke otherwise no. Totally agree about Black Label, a waste of money.

IMHO Chivas is just another blended Scotch Whisky, nothing special.

I prefer single malts like Ardbeg or Caol Ila my preferred.

Here Whisky and distilleries in Scotland - Scotch Whisky - you'll find an exhaustive list of single malts.

I remember it was quite popular in Thailand - along with the Black label

I'm laying off the juice for a bit

Laphroaig is nice, just a tad peaty for my taste, but very good quality.
I'm partial to 8 year Glenmorangie.
But for the money it's tough to top good old Jamesons for a tip top straight drinking whiskey.

JW and Chivas are overpriced and overrated shit! Given the choice I'd drink Sang Song and soda over a Johnny Walker or Chivas.

I know it's not whiskey but a super straight drinking booze that's available here is the Havana Club anejo. That is some really smooth booze.

Just got a bottle of Ardbeg on friday, finished half of it with a friend. Now my hangover is almost gone.

I am not sure when the reminiscence of the medicine like taste will be gone.

I always thought that Chevas or JW Black was as good as you could get and it was available just damn near everywhere we worked or could drink, so I always stuck with it, JW Red is what my dad drank and had around, pobly because he knew it was safe from me,,nasty shit, but of coarse he also had Haig & Haig Pinch too,, yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa..

Thats the stuff (nearly - Laphroaig actually). Try the Quarter cask if you can get it. Well worth it.

They had Chivas at 650 baht a bottle one night at a place in Baeng Saeng (sp?), earlier this year, called the Galaxy or something

    Tasted all right that night

CR is a waste of money. Relatively ok drinking whiskey, if mixed, but in no way a good sipping whiskey.

Chivas is pretty good, certainly better than black. However if one can afford JW Blue - give that a go. Quite the experience for the whiskey aficionado.
