100 Pipers single malt - any good + whiskey in general.

I'm a whiskey fan but haven't yet tried the new 100 Pipers single malt (900B) - anyone tried it and is it worth the dosh?

Not a great fan of the normal 100 Pipers so am not that keen on taking a chance with 900B.
Is it worth spending a bit extra for the 'proper stuff' ?

Johnnie Walkers is ok but not much in the way of flavour..

Master Blend - - industrial spirit from the Phillipines (still they don't actually call it whiskey so I guess that's fair)

That's WHISKY without the 'e'. Scots are touching about this sort of thing.

Pots and kettles spring to mind.

Now, is the 100 Pipers malt whisKY and good or not?

Did I really write 'touching'? Whiskey with an 'e' usually implies Irish Whiskey thus the 'good natured' rivalry.

I can't afford to drink whisky enough to become a connoisseur - the cooking stuff is good enough for me.

100 Pipers is the Asian label for Black Watch whisky.

NOw for a whisky to be officially called a whishy it needs to be aged 5 years.

100 Pipers single malt just means that rather than blending the different whiskys they have made it from a single malt. It will still only be aged the minium 5 years and will still taste like shite.

If you want something nice to drink but cheaper Jamesons Irish WHiskEy is good at 600B - You can get grouse and bells at that price but you are better off drinking normal 100 pipers rather than wasting your money on them.

1600 for a bottle of Glenfiddish would be a better plan though.

You are asking a Whisky afficionado here. I have no idea of 100 pipers though because I always bring the whisky with me to Thailand. Do you get a Laphroaig or Glen Morangie in Thailand?
(I am quite sure I have already asked that. My memory is so weak.)

Fabian: I'm not sure - but I'll look into it.

I don't think the 100 Pipers can be much good because I've never seen it for sale back home (England) where whisky is one of the most popular drinks -I reckon it's like all the other unheard of brands - ie: only the shite gets exported.

I love a good single malt - can anyone explain to me though exactly what single malt is and why it tastes better?

Surely lots of decent malts blended together should still have a great flavour..

also , is there such thing as Johnnie Walker BLUE label?

what about the BLACK label - does it taste any better - I'm sure back home it's more expensive only because it's 3% stronger.

I remember drinking some OBAN in the past - great smoky flavour.

    Glenmorangie , another great whisky.

Red, Black, Gold, Blue and Green apparently.

I have bought 100 Pipers in the UK before, but of course brands come and go as the marketeers see fit.

I've never been brave (or desperate) enough to try Lao Kao.

Yes, there definitely is and it's above black label.

yes, it tastes better, half decent in my opinion.

100 Pipers is BLack Watch in the UK I just said that.

Glen MOrangie and Lophraog are Mass produced whiskys for the market.

A nice Dalhwhiny is what you are after or an OBan as mentioned.

A true [b]afficionado/[b] would not be drinking such main stream whiskys unless entertaining an ignorant guest.

Johnny have a single malt as well.

100 pipers is the supermarket brand of scotch in Australia.
It's pretty much crap nightclub whisky. I can't imagne the singlemalt would be worth 900b.
If the jamesons is only 600b why not stop there. that's a good drink.

Laphroaig is hardly mass produced for the market.
Can buy it by the glass in the Bull's Head!

I'm going to check Robinsons out in my lunch break to see what they have.

I wonder what the most expensive whisky is.

That 100 Pipers can give you a mean head in the morning.

I saw a bottle a couple of years ago in the duty free at Heathrow for something like 30,000 pounds (2 million Baht). Obviously not your run of the mill supermarket stuff. I can't even imagine being so rich that I would spend that sort of money on a bottle of booze.
    Lord, deliver us from e-mail.

    Do you remember the make?

Had a look in Tops today - Johnnie Walker Blue Label - 7,000B

    Gold Label (matured 18 years)- 2000B and Green Label (15 years)1600B .

Black Label (12 years) - 900B. - these aren't all single malts though.

Well , I'm on the Red label at the moment but next pay day I'll try and get some single malt.

The 100Pipers Malt (blended malt) was about 550B and matured for 8 years so it could be worth a try.

    Agreed.

Don't drink much whisky but always have a bottle of Jamesons hanging around. I think at under 600 baht it is certainly the best value. After that, Glenfiddich is still comparatively cheap here.

And for the pedants, yes I know. Jamesons is actually a whiskey.

Remember the older the whisky doesn't mean that it is better.

It is just the choice of the distillery. Some whiskys are best bottled at 12 years some at 15.

Just because its old doesn't mean it's good.

yey, something to do with the alcohol content or something- apparently whiskey loses 1% strength each year through the oak casks so maybe some is aged longer to get the right strength.

not sure what they do if it's too strong though - add water? , doubt it.

I guess that's where the blending comes into play.
