What's the Proper Amount of Alcohol?

I've been having a few beers every evening for as long as I can remember. No, make that at least 30 years or so; much longer than I can actually remember.

As of now I've come to the conclusion that four beers per evening is just about right. Sometimes I have one Scotch or Gin and Tonic followed by three beers, but that's about the same difference.

If I drink less than that I don't really get that nice beer buzz that caps the evening off so well. If I drink more than that the morning run is not as easy as it should be.

How about you? What's your optimal daily beer consumption (ODBC)?

I have to agree. I keep thinking that if I don't drink I'll feel better the next day, but it never works out that way.

BTW, how do you stay awake for twelve? Once I hit six I'm nodding off and seven would surely put me under.

buadhai, how do you manage to always pull up after those 4 beers and not decide to have just a few more?

Drink is the devil's work. Zero for me.

OK, maybe one or two. Actually, I'm in London this week and my alcohol intake is limited purely by the need to make sure I can get back to where I'm sleeping before the last train leaves. Didn't actually make it on Monday so crashed out at a mate's.

In Bangkok it's limited by how sick I feel after 3 or 4 and what beer is available.
The truth is out there, but then I'm stuck in here.

I don't keep any beer in the house. Each night as "happy hour" approaches Ms. B and I walk 50 meters to the local mini-mart and buy the evening's stash: three or four beers for me and ice cream for Ms. B and her daughter. When the beer's done I shower and hit the sack.

If I bought by the case I wouldn't stop.

That said, I do have a bottle of gin and a bottle of Scotch on the premises and sometimes I sneak a post beer tot to hasten the Sandman's arrival.

BTW, just finishing beer number four now, so it's off to the shower room and then to bed.

    See you all tomorrow.

Thats a good idea, especially as it seems to work for you.

Is it your strong will or because of the missus that you don't sneak back down to the minimart? (or is it closed by then?)

depends, sometimes - i just keep going - get the taste for it so to speak.

other times - one beer and i start falling asleep.

in fact tonight dinner - 1 beer (large) and i had just closed my eyes on the couch in front of the TV ( and it was only 6.10pm too) and bladdy knock on the door! - it was my travel agent - he wanted the money for the ticket to Bali that i'd bought yesterday but forgotten to pay for! Crap - had to drive down to the ATM first and then blah blah,

suddenly i've had a couple of red wines and whiskeys and feeling wide awake!

good point - but i usually just decide to have one more ... over and over.

    it's quite morish innit?

BTW - have you checked out that Wallace and Gromit thead ? Pure Guiness actually!

A little of both. We just heard the shutters coming down, so more beer now is out of the question.

Ms. B has never directly criticized my consumption, but now and then asks "how many". My reply is usually, "Don't count".

After all, she met me in a bar, what does she expect?

that woud qualify as a drinking problem, definitely. The trick is to keep it under control because one day you will lose that control.

It should be no more than 2 beers every 2 days and then, and that already would be quite high.

    4 beers a night, that's a FUCKING RED ALERT !!! NO SHIT.

Well I'm only a social drinker.

    Maybe 5 - 10 bottles of beer / year.

I have 1-2 glasses of wine each night -- usually pour one and sip while preparing dinner and continue to the second with dinner. We're trying to drink more red than white, with some of the research saying that moderate amounts of red wine have a positive affect on heart/circulation (hey, it's a rationale). On weekends, I can sip pretty much all afternoon and maintain a pleasant buzz.

My one firm rule -- no driving after a third drink, no matter whether it's wine or liquor. I just know my capacity and couldn't possibly pass a breathalyzer test after three drinks.

I'm finding as I get older that liquor hits harder, and I have to be careful with the "happy hour" drink on an empty stomach. I like gin, and the gin martini or a gin-and-tonic can knock me for a loop!

I wish I were, but most people don't realize they have one. Like I said if you keep it under control, it's fine, but you are on a thin line. It's like smokers with 5 cigarettes a day, one day they go to 1 pack and then 2 pack and it's too late already.
