Thai beer and additives - The myth/reality?

It seems to be most peoples' opinion that Thai beer (ie:Chang,Singha,Leo) gives you a bad hangover compared to decent stuff - ie: Heinekin.

I'm sure everyone's heard of the bullshit about formaldehyde etc.. but there must be some reason for the bad head in the morning off this locally produced pig's urine.

Why the bad head? - I can drink 2 local beers and get a hangover before the third yet no problem with normal beer.

Do they put some kind of additive in it or is it just an inferior manufacturing process of some kind , and if so what?

Apparently it only affects gays and animal lovers. So Wally told me anyway!

I've never had a problem no matter what the quantity!!

Chang is for headbangers who like hangovers - it's the Thai version of Tennant's Super Lager, the beverage of choice for winos in the park. I used to drink Singh, but the hangovers started getting ferocious too, so now I'm a confirmed Leo man unless there's some decent German wheatbeer going which someone else is paying for.

The sleep of reason brings forth monsters.

It's not the strength though that gives you the hangover.

I used to drink Tennants Super and Special Brew in the past and didn't get too bad a head the next day if I'd only had a couple of cans.

There's definitely something in the beer that fucks with your head - not just the alcohol.

l simply cannot finish a Signha. l have no idea what is in it, nor do l want to know. What l do know is, it tastes like crap and l have not attempted to drink one for years. San Miguel in Bali is nother shocker, yet the same beer in The Philippines is pretty decent, by comparison, go figure.

Beer Lao is only beer in SEA l do like, but just can't get hold of.

Thank God for that, I thought I was the only one who cannot drink the beer here.
I think it must be the amount of methyl alcohol in it that does your head in.
Did you know that Scottish & Newcastle tried to import Mekhong into the UK but it wouldn't pass the tests because of Methyl content.

I have never tried Lao but I find Red Horse very nice

I drink beer Chang with ice and have never had a problem. But I dont go out and get smashed. I have 2 or 3 and stop drinking by 8:30pm, go to bed at 10:00 and get up at 6 feeling fresh.
But if I drink until midnight or so, I do feel raspy the next day.

Singha is loaded with glycerin too (or so I've been told by my coach, so it must be true). All I know is, is that Leo is the only semi-drinkable 'beer' produced in Thailand.

A hangover is usually caused by dehydration. So drink lots of water too.

that may be true Thetyim, but Methyl alcohol is produced in the distilling process, something beers do not undergo

I like Singha, and it actually has a taste that is good (for me). Most beers that are sold taste of little. I dont usually get a headache with it, but Chang gives me one. Leo I cannot stand, it is horrible tasting.

I think most Thai beers are fairly strong, but I dont think they need any additives...what would be the point?
    I have reported your post

Chang's okay, I hate Singha and will only drink it if there's one open.

Don't feel to bad the next day....but maybe I've just got used to it.

I find I'm getting more picky as I get older. Also, I can no longer drink everyday - most I can do these days is 2 or 3 days a week (unless I'm on vacation).

Kind of weird, but in the last few years I find a nice G&T or VAT much more preferable to a beer. Even a half decent bottle of red would be my preferance these days.

Unlike the OP I rarely suffer hangovers (possibly because I rarely drink more than 3 or 4 beers *unless I am out with MtD or AO, when I let myself go a little *. What I do find, however, is that I sh*t through the eye of a needle the next day if I drink a few local beers

True story this. In my late teens I attended a promotion party in Africa for a new drink being launched. The promoters thought it would be a good idea to have a drinking contest as part of the promotion party. The guy who won died of alcohol poison

Singha Gold - I'm not sure that its available anymore. It was their export beer and infinitely better than the domestic shite.

Some long-term Thailand expats from Canada told me that Canada doesn't allow Change and Sinha into Canada because the of "chemical variation" in the beer. Apparently when the these beers are tested, there are different amounts of certain chemicals in them.

Might be wrong, but that's what they say.

could be true Milkman as the QC processes can be rubbish

and Singha water comes out of the Chao Phrya, or near enough (they say they use a borehole but I am not sure how deep it is!!)

anyway, I agre with William, I am more of a red wine man. Luckily my local bar is happy to charge me 100baht if I bring my own bottle, so that is what I often do
