Inexpensive Wine Thread

We all know that wine is expensive in LOS due to the tax structure. But, there are bargains now and then. If you run across a wine that is reasonably priced but still good, post your discovery here: name, price, vendor

Mine first:

Le Pichet, French Table Wine -- 249 baht -- Lotus: Low on cash, I bought this in desperation to go with some French bread, ham and cheese. It was lovely, given the price and, in answer to the ultimate question: yes, I would buy it again.

Lao Khao, Thai Under-the-Table Wine, 20 baht bottle

With it's pungent bouquet and tendency to give you the runs this wine is not for everyone. Usually served at gutter temperature with a selection of fried insects.

Found it at a reasonable off licence in Banglampoo (bkk) for 310 per bottle as standard

For 399 you get a real great one at Makro,

Allonzo, something like that...(escquecelent, hips )


They have another at makro, spanish aswell for 199 we use it for cooking... if you drink this one it is a bit bitter...

The really best thing for having a good glass of wine handy is to go at a Villa Market, they normally have a good choice of wines packed on containers of 3 or 5 liters

5 liter french wine good quality, chateau Bouchard, 1500 Thb, so if you calculate that out it's a decent price, and you can keep it for quiet some time for your everyday use...

I have been buying chinzano for 275baht a bottle, it's great if you chuck in some vodka to up the alchol content of it

French, chiilian,Aussi all in 5 ltrs in Villa Market, the Chateau Bouchard was a very good one, nice "Palais", they could sell it in Europe no problem..

I tried another one from Corsica this one was kind of " Piao " ( bitter ) but second glass is fine. this one was in 3 liter container...

I tried many from there over the years and never had a bad experience with those containers, normally very drinkale wines inside, cheers...

Do you like Spy? red, classic, black...

I had a few ladies coming over my house and these Spy was their all time choice, they need 2 or 3 each to be high...

For once i made them some "spritzer" as the ladys call it in the states...
Red wine with Sprite, they do not drink Spy anymore and love this spritzer...

So glad I read this thread. I love wine. Everytime I have been in LOS I never even thought of buying it. Why? because I had read somewhere that it was really expensive. Well going by what you are all wirting it doesn't seem too expensive.

as for wine, I like it a lot

The prices may be high due to the tax, but why should ALL the prices be doubled. I can see that at the cheap end the tax is a lot proportionately, but the more expensive wines should not be so much more

I also don't understand how they do the two or three for one deals. How does the tax work on those?

So, if a wine has a value of say $2 (US) a litre, it will cost $7.80 plus shipping and costs incurred in Thailand. Aussie wine should come down in a year or two due to the FTA (or so I believe).

Obviously, the important thing is to have a good negotiator when dealing with Thai C&E as the price is fixed after the first importation. Thank goodness for dual invoicing and the lack of the rule law in Thailand, or all your liquor would cost a hell of a lot more.

I just bought an australian wine for 1.98. Funnily it is called Captain's so I think the Cap is hiding from us that he is having this business as well.

I assume it is done as a loss leader, ie they still make a tiny bit of profit but it is just to introduce the dirty massess to their fine wines
