Ayutthaya - Hua Raw Chinese Temple and Market

Ayutthaya - Hua Raw Chinese Temple and Market on the North of U Thong Road, this is one of the main areas for cheap food in the evenings and also has a nice curving road leading to the river which sells traditional Chinese herbs and other odds and ends, the curve was probably made for defense against Burmese invaders but now they are all concrete shop houses, (well that is called progress )

Well lets have a look down the curving road and see what delicacies they have to offer.

Nope no idea what that is, probably dried up deers testicles skins or something like that.

    Magic mushrooms perhaps.

I am not even going to take a wild guess at what this stuff maybe, must be dead chopped up sun dried testicles of some sort of animal.

As you get to the end of the road you will find the river and a jetty where you can rent longtail boats, reckon on about 2 or 300 baht per hour.

You will also come across this tiny Chinese Temple, nope I have no idea of what the name of it is, where is Ken May when you need him

The place to burn your fake money, I wonder why the Chinese do that...

They do build nice roofs though, although I have no idea how much per square meter a roof like this would cost.

    The money BBQ pit.

    Some fancy designs.

    A 3D Tiger.

Somewhere for the Chinese to pray.

How long does it take to make one of these?

    They have loads of them.

Me and Ken more or less identified them all, bit difficult from the pick though, never did buy my cardomum after, never mind I say a bag in Makro the other day.

But when asked you could scratch your head with one hand whilst playing with your bollocks with the other hand in your pocket and say,

"Well luv, thats gonna cost you a good few grand that is"

Just like any other builder would, right?

This Chinese temple is called "San Chaomae Tonjan". Chinese lived at this site even during the Ayutthaya period. There was an old dock and a fortress in the nearby, and the Chinese had a market as well. This area became a center of the rice trade around 1850 and the Chinese more or less controlled the industry. It is still called China Town today. Many of the vendors speak both Chinese and Thai.

The temple in the photographs was built much later; after the Bowring Treaty. I don't think it is as dangerous as ROC thinks. The local mafias leave tourists alone. I have been there in the evening many times. I would fear the rats, soi dogs, and unlit streets more at night. Anyway, there is no reasoon to go to this center at night since everything is closed.

As a side note specifically for Dirty Dog. The Hua Ror market had Ayutthaya's first and only porn theater. They played Hollywod rejects that would have been rated "R" by today's standards. Some of the old expatriates remember it, but it closed around 2004. I think you would have preferred the Internet.
