Issan / Nong Khai / Wat Khaek - Sala Kaew Ku

These photos are from October 2003 and February 2004. Wat Khaek is a large concrete sculpture garden just east of Nong Khai as you are heading towards Phon Phi Sai. The sculptures are a mix of Buddhist, Hindu, and Confucian influences with the naga being a rather large part of many of the sculptures. It's one of the few tourist traps in Nong Khai but still interesting to see. The days I went it wasn't particularly busy. Takes about an hour or so to walk around and explore all the statues. The photos are in no particular order.

This is the place where the American-Lao couple were assassinated by the Thai coppers earlier this year.

I found the place to be kind of creepy.

The sculpture was done by this exiled Laotian guy known as Luang Pa Bunleua Sulilat. His body is still enshrined there. They've preserved all sorts of relics from his life, including his final hospital bed and his last bit of bloody vomit. You can see his photo in this picture:

Magnificent pictures. Might I inquire as to the camera used?

Wonderful pictures. Been here for years and never been there. Guess I know where I'm going next. Thanks for the photos.

Good to pass a couple of hours, take some tissue, the toilets to the left in front of the park entrance are pretty grim. You'll get some good pictures here if the lights right, towards the late afternoon. Make sure you have fully charged batteries in your camera.
