Wat Bha Rak Roi - Nakorn Ratchasima (Korat)

I probably have the spelling of this one wrong as well.

Anyway, this is truly the strangest wat I've ever visited in Thailand. It's more like an amusement park of horrors than a wat. I'll limit the post to a few truly bizarre photos of some of the "sculpture" that is on display:

It's about Hell !

Horror actually describes these sculptures. This display represents the "hell animals" (Saat Narok) - yes, even the ones that appear to be human.

These statues, or whatever you may want to call them are shown suffering in the underworld. The punishment is a consequence of the sin committed during their human life. Some of the animals have rank over others and inflict the appropriate penalty, according to the "Judge of the Dead" (Phaya-Yomaraj).

Wat Phai Rong Wua in Supanburi Province has more examples of punishment in Hell, meted out according to the sins committed. It is a presentation to remind us worldly humans what could happen after death, if we do not follow at least five of the basic precepts.

It seems very un-Buddhist and very, very animist to me.

When we were there Ms. B was quite horrified. She kept saying, "This isn't a wat, it's an amusement park.

Yes, I know there are eight "hells" in Buddhism. I guess the portrayal at this place just seemed odd....

That about sums up Thai Buddhism anyway; Animist-selfishness is a better label for it.

The more common spelling of the name is Wat Pa Lak Roy. According to this website it's 20 K from Phimai, so it couldn't be near Sung Noen.

I'll see if I can find out just where it is.

I asked the driver who took us there (it was almost two years ago) and he said that it is near Nong Thai on highway 205. Other than that, we don't remember. It's odd that after quite a bit of Internet searching and paper map searching I can't find its location anywhere....
