A trip around Chiang Mai Province

In August I spent a week travelling aroung Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai.

In Chiang mai we styed at the Royal Princess Hotel near the night market and had dinner with everyones favourite CM lawyer....

In the one day we were there we started with a visit to doi suthep. Slightly disappointing as the main chedi is covered in scaffolding......

Here are the pics from Doi Suthep.

Nice pics. What's with the scaffolding though, are they (re)building something up there?

I believe there are worries that the main chedi is crumbling, so they are doing work to strengthen it.

Seeing as I'm on bustak's turf I'd better include an obligitory black and white cat shot......

Last couple of pics from Doi Suthep

After that we headed towards Wat U-Mong which was a recommendation from bustak. Interesting old temple in the forest....

Anyway, next set of pics, these are from Wat Phra Singh inside the city walls, thrirs time I've visited this temple, always a good place for monk shots, lots of them there, but I only stopped in briefly.

Last pic from Wat Phra Singh.....

We ended the day walking back to the hotel, passed one temple just as the sun was setting and the light was awesome..... however the temple was average apart from a Gold plated Lanna style chedi which was reflecting this perfect light and made for some good shots....

This one looked good in B&W with all the angles created by the metal work and reflection.....

The buddah image set into the side of the chedi.

    Temple doors.....

Should have put this in the last post, I just liked the light on the temple roof...

In another temple we passed on the way.....

Next morning we left Chiang Mai heading North. First stop was Chiang Dao where we visited the caves. Not the greatest caves ever but the kids enjoyed it. Lots of bats and we saw the huge spider (there was two) that I posted in the flora / fauna thread eating a large cricket.

This was outside the caves in the grounds of a fairly unremarkable temple...

    Buddah images inside the caves

After the caves we headed up to doi angkhang where we were staying in the amari for the night. I was damp up there but nice and cool. Didn't get the 'above clouds' shots I wanted, it was actually quite clear up there.

    Stunning pictures!

You just made me give up taking photos on my own.
There is just no point in that with competition like this.

    cheers

The last stop in Chiang Mai was the temple at Tha Ton, unbelieveably called, Wat Tha Ton. I've done a seperate thread for the temple pics.

    https://teakdoor.com/thailands-wats-temples-and-mosques/57893-bobcock-wat-tha-ton-chiang-mai.html#post1188095

At level 3 of the temple (it has 9 levels) we stopped at a view point to look down over the Mae Nam Kok. On the other side of the river is Chiang Mai and the mountains behind are the border with Myanmar.

After a couple of shots the heavens open and we had a downpour that really ruined the temple visit.

By the time it finished we were up to level 9 which had nice views looking down to the plateau below.

Last shot is from level 9 looking North as the river winds off up into Myanmar.

That's it for chiang mai, the rest of the trip will be covered in a Chiang Rai thread.
