You said (or wrote) basically what I thought when I read the thread. It is one thing to discuss politics with close friends or anonymously on the net, but for a foreigner to be seen publicly taking sides in what is gradually turning into a rather tense political situation is just plain stupid.

A foreigner walking around with a shirt proclaiming support for either side deserves anything coming his way. And doing so at night while heavily intoxicated seems to imply some sort of death wish.
Any error in tact, fact or spelling is purely due to transmissional errors...

Could it be that the army itself put the bus on fire? I think this unelected regime had some reasons to give order to do so for to show the world how bad and stupid the redshirts are....

Could it be that Abhisit attacked his own car? Were the red shirts in fact yellow shirts in disguise out to discredit the redshirts? Did Sondhi shoot himself? Are there buffaloes in Thailand? Is the moon made of cheese?

The sad fact is, we'll never know for sure........

Dear CSW - I am so sorry that my opinion causes you so much distress, and hence apologize profusely for having the audacity to express these here. From now on, I will consistently applaud all your future endeavours, and encourage you to make a habit out of getting drunk in public areas wearing as much UDD paraphernalia as possible.

    thanx pot, interesting thread.
can't believe there are so many fukkn sissies on this forum, especially the twat who accused you of endangering the foreigners in thailand by your percieved political stance (thaiguy et al).
guys like HIM endanger us all, since his ilk gives the thai the wrong impression (or, in his case, the RIGHT impression)i: that foreigners are easily intimidated and easy targets, with no balls, who will lie down and take any shit from the yellow dwarfs, without retalliating.
    watch for his "my-thai-wife-took-everything-i-own-and-threw-me-out-and-moved-her-policeman-boyfriend-into-my-house thread!

Interesting thread and thanks to our roving reporters- and the three 'protest movements' are also a retrospect on the time I have lived in Thailand-

The Putsch or Coup happened a few months after I moved here. Backed by the 'powers that be', and thankfully bloodless. A Military government installed, which proved to be pretty inept, but they keep their promise to hold elections in a couple of years. To the chagrin of the 'powers that be' the popular vote does not reflect their wishes however. Will they never learn...

The yellow shirts. The most bloody and disruptive protest movement. Some yellow shirts but more opposition protesters are killed, the international airport is occupied and shut down, Parliament house ransacked. Tacitly backed by the 'Powers that Be'. The Judiciary is working complicitly behind the scenes also- the elected PM is ousted for running a cooking show, his replacement ousted judicially also. A ragtag coalition headed by Abhisit of the Democrats is installed.

The Red shirts. Quite predictable, given the events above. The most 'popular' protest movement in terms of numbers- but not backed or condoned by the 'Powers that Be'. Some violence, the Asean summit in Pattaya is disrupted and cancelled, some Red Shirts are killed by government forces and possibly anti-Red vigilantes. Unquestionably, the Red shirts and allied movements have paid the highest price in terms of blood- but this is predictable when the 'Powers that be' that control the security forces and judiciary are not on your side. It could've been far worse.

Throughout most of this, Pattaya remained blissfully apolitical- money to make, tourists to rip off. I remember I was out in Pattaya during the night of the coup'- and didn't even realise it was happening until I read about it on TD next morning. I guess that changed with the disruption of the ASEAN summit.

Up here in rural Ubon, things are pretty apolitical also. Unlike Udon, KK & CM, or for that matter the South, Ubon is actually quite politically diverse- it voted in candidates from four different parties when democratic elections were last held. Some people are anti-Thaksin and not afraid to say so, some pro. But most people are basically just sick and tired of the ongoing farce and disruptions down south- if the mood is indicative, the 'Powers that Be' will likely get their way for now. Without making a case for what is right or wrong, most people are just tired of the neverending bullshit- in remote Ubon, the central government is a long way away and people don't much care about (or for) the government, whoever the latest monkeys may be- and know that the government doesn't much care about them. They're fine with that.

There are frogs and insects to catch, changing seasons, fish ponds and rice paddies to dig, rice to plant, cashews to harvest and so on. Such things are much more important here than the Chinese preoccupations of power and money, and the shifting alliances battling over who's snouts are nearest to the corruption trough. Thats been the never ending story of Thai politics, as people here understand.
