On the Thai side of the Burmese/Thai border, an overnight bus-ride from BKK and also an attractive option for visa runs from upcountry.

A medium size city with a fair proportion of Burmese population, a sprawling local market with interesting food-stuff, a speciality market at the border with Burmese handicrafts and foods, such as dried mushrooms, beans and nuts, and cheap ciggies.
I didn't think about taking pics for general info when I went there last year, so here just a few shots taken from my private videos, so not the best quality:

A stall selling Burmese style betelnuts.
The black beads added to the mix are not everyone's cup of tea, chewing this concoction provides a short potent high for about a minute, but it made me feel sick and I had to throw up.

The kind folks who took care of the missus who was in tears when I was picked out of the bus and arrested for overstay:

Two gem-dealers from BKK and a local contact who showed us around (I was released a few hours later).
This pic is at one of the Burmese coffee shops where you may enjoy savoury rotis with mashed chickpeas for breakfast - with black tea or sweet creamy Chai, delicious.

We were invited to have dinner at the local's house, where they were drying spiced beef in the garden:

Mae Sot is also a gem trade center, but the pics of the market and the stone-carving workshop are on a different video I haven't processed yet.
